href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/03\/09\/social-emotional-learning-now-a-vehicle-for-critical-race-theory\/\">serves<\/a> as the primary vehicle for Critical Race Theory (CRT), an agenda that is unpopular with many American parents, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/leadership\/schools-face-fears-of-critical-race-theory-as-they-scale-up-social-emotional-learning\/2021\/12?utm_source=nl&amp;utm_medium=eml&amp;utm_campaign=eu&amp;M=64244998&amp;U=3202527&amp;UUID=e8465deb6006e19aafc0c409a9859f5f\">suggests<\/a> a report at <em>Education Week<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12.39608801956\">\n<p>On the one hand, interest in building or expanding SEL programs is surging among educators and parents, supported by an unprecedented infusion of billions of dollars in federal&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/policy-politics\/everything-you-need-to-know-about-schools-and-covid-relief-funds\/2021\/09\">COVID-19 relief aid<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, school and district leaders are facing emotionally charged conversations with the public as states consider bills to limit teaching about \u201cdivisive subjects\u201d such as racism and sexuality.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><em>Education Week<\/em> adds some \u201cright wing political groups\u201d are tying SEL and \u201cequity\u201d to CRT, \u201cthough schools insist they are advance \u201cequity\u201d as a central focus of education in light of the \u201chistoric funding for schools\u201d in the American Rescue Plan earlier this year, Biden Education Secretary Miguel Cardona <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ed.gov\/news\/press-releases\/department-education-announces-actions-advance-equity-education\">announced<\/a> in June.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is our moment as educators and as leaders to transform our education systems so they are truly serving all of our nation\u2019s students,\u201d&nbsp;he said. \u201cWe must take bold action together to ensure our nation\u2019s schools are defined not by disparities, but by equity and opportunity for all.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The announcement followed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2021\/04\/19\/2021-08068\/proposed-priorities-american-history-and-civics-education#print\">proposal<\/a>, in April, of a rule supporting the development of \u201cculturally responsive teaching\u201d in American history and civics.<\/p>\n<p>In its proposed rule, the U.S. Education Department held up the widely&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/the-media\/2020\/09\/21\/nolte-1619-projects-fires-off-new-lies-to-cover-up-old-lies\/\">discredited<\/a>&nbsp;New York Times\u2019&nbsp;\u201c1619 Project,\u201d which teaches the United States is fundamentally a racist nation, as a model for schools.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" equity,\u201d the Biden education department said its plans \u201care part of the Department\u2019s ongoing efforts to implement President Biden\u2019s Day One&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/presidential-actions\/2021\/01\/20\/executive-order-advancing-racial-equity-and-support-for-underserved-communities-through-the-federal-government\/\">Executive Order<\/a>&nbsp;to advance racial equity and support for underserved communities across the federal government and build our schools and communities back better than before the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.ed.gov\/about\/offices\/list\/ocr\/docs\/20210608-impacts-of-covid19.pdf\">report<\/a> that underscored how the coronavirus pandemic delivered \u201cdisparate impacts\u201d on students in \u201cunderserved communities,\u201d the education department went to great lengths to name nearly every political identity group.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cCOVID-19 has deepened pre-pandemic disparities in access and opportunities facing students of color, multilingual learners, students with disabilities, and LGBTQ+ students,\u201d the department asserted, stating the pandemic even placed students \u201cat heightened risk of sexual harassment, abuse and violence \u2013 particularly girls, women, and students who are transgender, non-binary, or gender non-conforming.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"10.521126760563\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">TakeCharge, a black-led movement challenging Critical Race Theory (CRT) and woke culture, released data this week that obstructs the \u201cracial disparities\u201d narrative education department also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eventbrite.com\/e\/equity-summit-series-launch-registration-157257849461\">launched<\/a>&nbsp;a virtual \u201cEquity Summit Series\u201d that aimed to urge schools to \u201cinfuse equity into all of their work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While the U.S. Education Department, under both Democrat and Republican administrations, has held up&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2019\/03\/11\/study-social-and-emotional-learning-the-new-age-nanny-state\/\">social and emotional learning<\/a>, a form of \u201cpsychological training\u201d for children, as essential to in-school learning, public schools have essentially&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2020\/04\/27\/historic-drop-u-s-reading-math-scores-common-core-debacle\/?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=social\">failed<\/a>&nbsp;American students in the major academic areas of English, reading, and math.<\/p>\n<p>Heritage Foundation researchers recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/education\/2021\/11\/28\/national-assessment-reveals-significant-drop-in-13-year-olds-reading-math-scores\/\">reported<\/a> that \u201cdespite&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2021\/10\/22\/school-spending-up-test-scores-down\/\">record-high education spending<\/a>\u201d in the United States over the past decade, the National Assessment of Educational Progress\u2019 2020 Long-Term Trend Assessment showed a statistically significant decline in 13-year-olds\u2019 reading and math scores. The Long-Term Trend Assessment covered a period of time that overlaps with another progressive reform intended to combat \u201cinequity,\u201d the Common Core State Standards.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.6711409395973\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So Democrats want American parents to believe that racist Critical Race Theory (CRT) is not taught in most schools, but their pals at the radical Teacher&#8217;s Unions are going to court to fight laws banning the teaching of CRT? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/I95MUsh4hh\">https:\/\/t.co\/I95MUsh4hh<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartNews\/status\/1414354852998787073?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 11, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As <em>Education Week<\/em> observes, however, SEL is big business, and school districts practically have money to burn right now:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"12.824915824916\">\n<p>Between the 2019-20 and 2020-21 academic years,&nbsp;district spending on SEL programming <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edweek.org\/leadership\/pandemic-racial-justice-fuel-surge-in-demand-for-social-emotional-learning\/2021\/10\">grew<\/a>&nbsp;about 45 percent, from $530 million to $765 million, according to a report by the consulting firm Tyton Partners and published with the Collaborative for Social, Emotional, and Academic Learning, or CASEL.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As attorney and education researcher Jane Robbins <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2021\/02\/08\/how-socio-emotional-learning-became-another-vehicle-for-anti-white-racism-in-schools\/\">noted<\/a> at the Federalist in February, CASEL CEO Karen Niemi&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.the74million.org\/article\/niemi-casel-is-updating-the-most-widely-recognized-definition-of-social-emotional-learning-heres-why\/\">announced<\/a>&nbsp;last December her company revised its definition of and framework for SEL.<\/p>\n<p>Robbins wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10.261194029851\">\n<p>Woke-speak pervades the new direction. In contrast to the previous fairly&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2019\/07\/01\/social-emotional-learning-new-education-fad\/\">anodyne definition<\/a>&nbsp;of SEL, the new one emphasizes student \u201cidentities\u201d and \u201cmarginalization,\u201d \u201cequity,\u201d \u201cjust communities,\u201d and the \u201ccollective\u201d rather than the individual.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.0321100917431\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Former Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who persistently denies CRT exists in schools, oversaw the Education Dept. in 2015 when it encouraged using CRT. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/481zaMLyyS\">https:\/\/t.co\/481zaMLyyS<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartNews\/status\/1449723332916617217?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 17, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In a June 2020 webinar titled \u201cSEL as a Lever for Equity and Social Justice,\u201d CASEL\u2019s Niemi and her colleagues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UPWrnBA2274\">urged<\/a> the elimination of the \u201ccolor-blind\u201d approach in education which, traditionally, has been tied to \u201cequality.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSocial-emotional learning must actively contribute to anti-racism,\u201d Niemi said. \u201cWe see SEL as a tool for anti-racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robbins noted, however:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"14\">\n<p>No decent person approves of racism, but the new concept of \u201canti-racism\u201d has a more sinister meaning. Under this system of ideas, white children are by definition oppressors, minority children (except, presumably, higher-achieving on average Asian children) are by definition oppressed, and all of education must devolve into a churning mass of guilt and resentment.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>CASEL\u2019s Niemi also pushed for SEL to motivate students to become equity activists, to \u201cmove from anger to agency and then to action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll this&nbsp;will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.the74million.org\/article\/niemi-casel-is-updating-the-most-widely-recognized-definition-of-social-emotional-learning-heres-why\/\">come<\/a>&nbsp;from teaching children to \u2018examine prejudices and biases . . .
