The law will apply to larger buildings after 2027 while hospitals and commercial kitchens will be exempt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a historic step forward in our efforts to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels,\u201d said Ben Furnas, a top climate adviser in de Blasio\u2019s office, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/15\/nyregion\/nyc-gas-stove-heat-ban.html\">according<\/a> to The New York Times. \u201cIf we can do it here, we can do it anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio has supported the legislation for years, arguing it would be key to cutting the city\u2019s reliance on fossil fuels and setting it up for a carbon-free future. (Spencer Platt\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cPatterned after that extraordinary retrofit law for our big buildings, we\u2019re going to take the next step,\u201d de Blasio <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/office-of-the-mayor\/news\/065-20\/transcript-mayor-de-blasio-presents-2020-state-the-city\">said<\/a> during his February 2020 State of the City address. \u201cFor largest buildings in New York City, we will work with the Council on a ban ending the use \u2013 over the next two decades, ending the use of oil and gas in our buildings, replacing it with clean electricity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But New York City still relies on fossil fuels for about <a href=\"https:\/\/www1.nyc.gov\/site\/sustainability\/our-programs\/energy.page\">85% of its electricity<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>National Grid, a company that supplies New York City with natural gas, has been a main opponent of the bill, saying it would lead to citywide blackouts as a result of increased demand of electricity, according to the NYT.
