The contempt motion passed 222-208 at about 11 p.m. with two Republicans voting alongside the unanimous Democratic caucus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s essential that witnesses cooperate with our investigation to get answers,\u201d said Mississippi Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson, the select committee\u2019s chair. \u201cThe law requires them to do so. And when a witness defies the law, that amounts to more than an obstruction of investigation \u2026 It\u2019s an attack on the rule of law.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis committee must get to the objective truth and ensure that January 6 never happens again,\u201d added Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney, the committee\u2019s vice chair.<\/p>\n<p>The full House vote followed a <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.house.gov\/meetings\/IJ\/IJ00\/20211213\/114313\/HRPT-117-NA.pdf\">report<\/a> released by the committee that painted Meadows as central to the effort to keep Trump in power despite his defeat to President Joe Biden. During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c-span.org\/video\/?c4991668\/january-6-committee-sends-mark-meadows-criminal-contempt-referral-house\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">meeting<\/a> the committee read several texts to Meadows from Donald Trump Jr. and Fox News hosts including Laura Ingraham, Brian Kilmeade and Sean Hannity urging him to tell Trump to condemn the rioters immediately. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/08\/jan-6-committee-contempt-congress-subpoenas-cheney-thompson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Jan. 6 Committee Threatens Contempt Referrals Over Defied Subpoenas)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMark, the president needs to tell people in the Capitol to go home,\u201d wrote Ingraham, according to the committee. \u201cThis is hurting all of us. He is destroying his legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meadows defended his communications surrounding the Capitol riot, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsmax.com\/us\/mark-meadows-contempt-of-congress-donald-trump-jr-jan-6\/2021\/12\/13\/id\/1048528\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">telling<\/a> Newsmax that he had tried to work with the committee by sharing \u201cnonprivileged information\u201d with it. \u201cThey tried to weaponize text messages, selectively leaked them, to put out a narrative, quite frankly, that the president didn\u2019t act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>House Republicans, meanwhile, cast Tuesday\u2019s vote as nothing more than vengeance against Trump from those politically opposed to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Democrats aren\u2019t interested in finding out how a disorganized hoard of rioters managed to break into the Capitol,\u201d said Indiana Republican Rep. Jim Banks. \u201cThey don\u2019t want to learn about the security breakdown that day and they don\u2019t care about preventing future attacks \u2026 They only care about attacking their political enemies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recommendation now heads to the Department of Justice, which will decide whether to prosecute Meadows.
