Students will be allowed to change their own gender themselves, including declaring themselves non-binary, without a parent\u2019s or guardian\u2019s permission, and without providing legal documentation recognizing the change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do understand that today a lot of individuals do not identify with the gender to which they were born,\u201d said Lewis.<\/p>\n<p>The new approach falls in line with Policy 252, a plan put in place by the School District of Philadelphia \u201cto affirm the rights of students who are transgender,\u201d Lewis told 6ABC.<\/p>\n<p>Those changes will not be reflected in Pennsylvania state records, however, as state law still requires that a student\u2019s information in the state Department of Education match the records on the student\u2019s legal birth certificate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is an important step forward in our effort to become a more equitable and inclusive school district,\u201d School District of Philadelphia Superintendent Dr. William Hite wrote to parents in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.philasd.org\/blog\/2021\/12\/09\/selectnonbinaryoption\/\">letter<\/a> announcing the policy.<\/p>\n<p>The lack of a parental permission requirement could be a sticking point for parents, but John Fisher-Klein, executive director for the LGBTQ-focused Attic Youth Center, advised parents to allow their children to be their \u201cauthentic\u201d selves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would make a plea to the parent,\u201d he told 6ABC. \u201cAnd that plea would be to create a space where your child can be authentically themselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are no statistics on the number of students in the district who identify as non-binary, but according to a survey of Philadelphia and the nearby cities of Camden, New Jersey, and Wilmington, Delaware, about 1.1% of respondents identified as \u201cnon-binary,\u201d about the same as the national figure, 6ABC reports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegardless of the number,\u201d Lewis told the outlet, \u201cthe goal is that any child feels like they are safe and they belong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A number of other school districts have encouraged students to declare themselves transgender without their parents\u2019 consent. The Daily Wire previously reported that school districts in the states of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/colorado-school-district-instructs-teachers-to-avoid-informing-parents-if-their-child-shows-persistent-gender-confusion\">Colorado<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/texas-teachers-instructed-to-help-students-hide-gender-identity-from-parents\">Texas<\/a> have both instructed teachers to conceal a student\u2019s transgender identity.
