Res 33, with solely Democrat votes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The measure moves to the House, where it is quickly expected to pass and get sent to President Joe Biden\u2019s desk. The federal government may face a default on its debt if Congress fails to raise the debt ceiling by December 15.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate passed the debt ceiling increase after the members created a one-time carveout to the Senate\u2019s rules, allowing Democrats to pass the bill with a simple majority.<\/p>\n<p>Conservatives have noted that this would grant Democrats a pathway to pass more legislation by breaking the filibuster.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), when the Senate approved the resolution to create the one-time filibuster carveout last week, warned that this would \u201cbe one more tool\u201d to be used to \u201cabuse the American people:\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"6.6521739130435\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This debt ceiling bill is a blank check for the Democrats&#8217; reckless tax and spending bill. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aNYhbVDos7\">pic.twitter.com\/aNYhbVDos7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mike Lee (@SenMikeLee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenMikeLee\/status\/1469079826921402371?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 9, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Rachel Bovard, the senior director of policy for the Conservative Partnership Institute, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/op-eds\/which-10-republicans-will-help-democrats-raise-the-debt-limit\">wrote<\/a> in a recent op-ed:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"15.704201680672\">\n<p>In the twisted world of Washington, D.C., politics, this allows McConnell and the Senate GOP to claim they are technically keeping their pledge not to raise the debt ceiling after they vote for a bill creating the opportunity for Democrats to do it for them. What\u2019s more, the legislation allows the Democrats to raise the debt ceiling to whatever amount they choose. Literally, the bill provides a <u><a class=\"Link x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/club4growth\/status\/1468313720132616194?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">blank space <\/a><\/u>for the number to be filled in. Presumably, they could insert the symbol for infinity, and Republicans would still happily tee up for the vote for them. Yes, I told you it was craven.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) said on the Senate floor ahead of the debt ceiling vote that the one-time carveout shows a path toward election reform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe could not imagine changing the rules. Until last week, we did exactly that. This is a step \u2026 we haven\u2019t been able to take to save our broken democracy \u2026 we changed the rules to protect the full faith and credit of the United States government,\u201d Warnock <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/burgessev\/status\/1470851567054209028?s=20\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA) said in a statement after the debt ceiling vote,<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>If Democrats can carve out the filibuster to raise the debt ceiling to avoid economic collapse for millions of American families, then we can do the same thing for voting rights. Our economy was at stake with the debt ceiling, and our democracy is at stake with voting rights. We should abolish the filibuster to provide electoral integrity at the ballot box and take action now to enshrine the will and voices of the American people.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) also said he is pushing Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV) to back filibuster reform.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a strong belief in the Senate,that we can restore the Senate and at the same time deal with voting rights, and that\u2019s what we\u2019re aiming to do,\u201d Schumer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/burgessev\/status\/1470842928478429184?s=20\">said<\/a> Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><i>Sean Moran is a congressional reporter for Breitbart News.
