A large wave is coming,\u201d a senior Biden administration official <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/omicron-coronavirus-cases-europe-us-c85be94d-8edf-4d61-9f05-de924bff6760.html\">told<\/a> Axios on Tuesday, predicting \u201cplenty of hospitalizations\u201d in the months ahead.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The <em>Washington Post<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/health\/2021\/12\/14\/omicron-us-spread\/\">reported<\/a> that top federal health officials from the Centers for Disease Control outlined their latest prediction models showing a large increase in cases and shared them with senior administration officials.<\/p>\n<p>One health official familiar with the briefing described the latest scenario as \u201cdaunting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe implications of a big wave in January that could swamp hospitals \u2026 we need to take that potential seriously,\u201d the official told the <em>Post.<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re considering the information at the highest levels right now, and thinking through how to get the public to understand what the scenarios mean,\u201d the official continued. \u201cIt looks daunting.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Studies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/first-big-omicron-study-finds-two-doses-of-pfizers-vaccine-cuts-hospitalization-risk-by-70-11639495432\">show<\/a>&nbsp;the existing coronavirus vaccines are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/vaccines-appear-weak-blocking-omicron-infection-shots-may-reduce-long-covid-2021-12-13\/\">not as effective<\/a> against the coronavirus variants but provide some level of protection.<\/p>\n<p>A White House official stressed that altering the coronavirus vaccines to be more effective against the Omicron variant was not being considered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to be careful not to repeat mistakes of the past,\u201d the official told the <em>Post<\/em>. \u201cIf there is a change needed, we want to make it, but we don\u2019t want to end up making a change if we don\u2019t really need it.
