The USS Constitution Museum debunked a version of the post in 2013.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The USS Constitution, an American warship also known as \u201cOld Ironsides,\u201d was active between 1797 and 1855 and is the world\u2019s oldest commissioned warship still afloat, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-pandemic-7b2c74155042da02517e807ff4559cb3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Associated Press<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, social media users have been sharing a story about the legendary ship and her crew\u2019s supposed prodigious appetite for alcohol. The post alleges that during the vessel\u2019s purported voyage from July 1798 to February 1799, the crew drank more than 100,000 gallons of alcohol, including rum, Portuguese wine and single malt Scotch.<\/p>\n<p>This claim, however, is not accurate, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/ussconstitutionmuseum.org\/about-us\/museum-history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">USS Constitution Museum<\/a>. The museum debunked the claim in an <a href=\"https:\/\/ussconstitutionmuseum.org\/2013\/06\/05\/capsizing-grog-tub-busting-favorite-my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">article<\/a> on its website in 2013, noting that such tremendous amounts of alcohol could not have been stored on the vessel. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/09\/15\/fact-check-pakistani-helicopter-panjshir-valley\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Image Show A Pakistani Helicopter In Afghanistan\u2019s Panjshir Valley?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo far, the 48,000 gallons of water mentioned in the story is not far off the mark, but the 79,400 gallons of rum on board at sailing is some eight times more than the ship&nbsp;<em>ever<\/em> carried!\u201d reads part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ussconstitutionmuseum.org\/2013\/06\/05\/capsizing-grog-tub-busting-favorite-my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">post<\/a> shared on the museum\u2019s website. \u201cBesides the extreme expense of so much rum, there was simply not room in the ship\u2019s hold for the barrels, puncheons, hogsheads, and butts needed to contain it all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The museum\u2019s article also notes that other aspects of the Facebook post\u2019s claims are inaccurate. While the Facebook post claims the Constitution traveled to England in 1798, the Constitution museum <a href=\"https:\/\/ussconstitutionmuseum.org\/2013\/06\/05\/capsizing-grog-tub-busting-favorite-my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">notes<\/a> the vessel was actually patrolling the East Coast of the U.S. and parts of the Caribbean at this time. The post\u2019s claims that the Constitution defeated five British warships and captured 12 British merchant ships in that year are also counter to the ship\u2019s official history. In reality, the Constitution only captured one vessel, the Niger, a British privateer, in 1798, according to the US Naval History and Heritage Command <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/browse-by-topic\/ships\/ships-of-sail\/uss-constitution-americas-ship-of-state\/background-for-media\/vessels-captured.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div readability=\"11.637393767705\">\n<p>While the Facebook post appears to exaggerate the famed ship\u2019s exploits in its early years, the Constitution did capture or destroy fifteen British ships during the War of 1812, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.navy.mil\/browse-by-topic\/ships\/ships-of-sail\/uss-constitution-americas-ship-of-state\/background-for-media\/vessels-captured.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">US Naval History and Heritage Command<\/a> website reported.
