The special meeting was called after what School Board President Brenda Wolff said was a \u201cprocedural mistake\u201d at the last meeting while school board members voted on the changed calendar.<\/p>\n<p>The new calendar gives teachers the week off between Christmas and New Year\u2019s but also allows other staffers, such as janitors, time off when they normally would have to work.<\/p>\n<p>Fox 5 reported that parents and BOE members \u201cvoiced frustrations\u201d at the previous meeting after they said they didn\u2019t receive the details of the calendar change proposal until just before the vote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I agree, there may be processes in which we can improve what that communication looks like, but we did start this conversation a couple months ago,\u201d Montgomery County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Dr. Monifa McKnight said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Judith Docca, an MCBOE member, supported the vote, saying, \u201cOur teachers and our administrators and other employees need a break so they can refresh and do a better job with our students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dawn Iannaco-Hahn, an MCPS parent, said: \u201cI just want transparency and honesty. If they want a break for the staff, then just say that. Don\u2019t mask it as professional development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another MCPS parent, Dr. Jennifer Linton Reesman, <a href=\"https:\/\/video.foxnews.com\/v\/6286766116001#sp=show-clips\">told<\/a> \u201cFox &amp; Friends First\u201d that the school board gave parents \u201cconflicting reasons\u201d for the expanded calendar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve given us conflicting reasons, saying that on one hand it\u2019s for professional development, on the other hand it\u2019s for planning time, which are two very different things,\u201d Reesman told the hosts, <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/14\/parents-are-furious-over-school-boards-decision-to-give-teachers-more-time-off-to-relieve-stress\/\">according to the Daily Caller<\/a>. \u201cAll we know is that they\u2019ve cut instructional time for children across the board here in Maryland and parents here, we are furious, we\u2019re fed up about this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reesman also told the program that fewer teaching days would cause educational issues for kids, pointing out that reading and math scores are down in the district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that children who are receiving reduced instructional time in school are more likely to have less educational outcomes, less likely to go to college, more likely to learn less over time, over their entire lifetime,\u201d Reesman said.<\/p>\n<p>Montgomery County Education Association (a teachers\u2019 union) president Jennifer Martin, however, defended the extra days off for teachers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think that while it doesn\u2019t do nearly as much for teachers as needed, it is in a step in the right direction,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>On Twitter, Martin added that \u201c[Early-release time is] an important step toward improving morale and giving teachers the space they need in order to prepare for students and give them an excellent education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
