was cut during a panel discussion and replaced with audio only \u201cat the behest of the White House.\u201d According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/curious-case-map-disappearing-taiwan-minister-us-democracy-summit-2021-12-12\/\">Reuters<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10\">\n<p>The White House was concerned that differentiating Taiwan and China on a map in a U.S.-hosted conference \u2014 to which Taiwan had been invited in a show of support at a time when it is under intense pressure from Beijing \u2014 could be seen as being at odds with Washington\u2019s \u2018one-China\u2019 policy, which avoids taking a position as to whether Taiwan is part of China, the sources said.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>However, after the move drew criticism across Washington, Biden administration sources told the <em>Washington Post<\/em>&nbsp;that the decision to \u201ctemporarily interrupt the Taiwanese official\u2019s video feed at the Democracy Summit was made at the technical level at the State [Department], not directed by the White House or the NSC.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.4668989547038\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My admin sources tell me the decision to temporarily interrupt the Taiwanese official&#8217;s video feed at the Democracy Summit was made at the technical level at the State Dept, not directed by the White House or the NSC. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oUH2bxP4b8\">https:\/\/t.co\/oUH2bxP4b8<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Josh Rogin (@joshrogin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/joshrogin\/status\/1470433453787299840?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 13, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But the source at the State Department with knowledge of the matter told Breitbart News on Monday, \u201cIt sounds like from reporting, the White House is trying to blame the State Department. It absolutely was not the case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The source said there was a run-through prior to the live panel discussion and the map was not seen during the run-through. But during the event, when the map appeared, the NSC was allegedly \u201ctaken aback and they were scrambling and they asked the State Department to shut it off.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was absolutely not the State Department that took the initiative to do that,\u201d the source told Breitbart News. \u201cThis was purely coming from the NSC that told them to shut it off.\u201d It is not clear who at the NSC directed it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__text___3eVx1j Text__dark-grey___AS2I_p Text__regular___Bh17t- Text__large___1i0u1F Body__base___25kqPt Body__large_body___3g04wK ArticleBody__element___3UrnEs\" data-testid=\"paragraph-10\">Reuters also reported the map had \u201cgenerated an instant email flurry among U.S. officials and the White House National Security Council (NSC) angrily contacted the State Department, concerned it appeared to show Taiwan as a distinct country.\u201d It also reported that a second source directly involved in the summit said the video booth operator \u201cacted on the White House instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Text__text___3eVx1j Text__dark-grey___AS2I_p Text__regular___Bh17t- Text__large___1i0u1F Body__base___25kqPt Body__large_body___3g04wK ArticleBody__element___3UrnEs\" data-testid=\"paragraph-10\">Washington even complained to Taiwan\u2019s government, which in turn was angry that Tang\u2019s video had been cut, Reuters reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__text___3eVx1j Text__dark-grey___AS2I_p Text__regular___Bh17t- Text__large___1i0u1F Body__base___25kqPt Body__large_body___3g04wK ArticleBody__element___3UrnEs\" data-testid=\"paragraph-10\">A State Department spokesperson told Breitbart News that during Minister Tang\u2019s presentation, \u201cthere was confusion over the use of screen sharing, which resulted in the video feed being dropped,\u201d and that it was \u201can honest mistake.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Text__text___3eVx1j Text__dark-grey___AS2I_p Text__regular___Bh17t- Text__large___1i0u1F Body__base___25kqPt Body__large_body___3g04wK ArticleBody__element___3UrnEs\" data-testid=\"paragraph-10\">The spokesperson also noted that the summit\u2019s webpage now has a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BkewUzZKanU\">link to a fully-uncensored video<\/a> of Tang\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__text___3eVx1j Text__dark-grey___AS2I_p Text__regular___Bh17t- Text__large___1i0u1F Body__base___25kqPt Body__large_body___3g04wK ArticleBody__element___3UrnEs\" data-testid=\"paragraph-10\">An NSC spokesman told Breitbart News:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"11\">\n<p>This reporting in Reuters is inaccurate. At no time did the White House direct that Minister Tang\u2019s video feed be cut. Confusion related to the unexpected use of screen-sharing led to the minister\u2019s video being temporarily dropped. Minister Tang\u2019s video can be viewed in its entirety on the Summit for Democracy\u2019s webpage.We valued Minister Tang\u2019s participation, which showcased Taiwan\u2019s world-class expertise on issues of transparent governance, human rights, and countering disinformation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In the original video feed of the summit, the map appeared behind Tang <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Nw2bfsjTXhA?t=15816\">the first time she spoke<\/a>, but the second time she spoke, there was only audio with a graphic of her name (as seen in video below).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"EN | The Summit for Democracy Day 2\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Nw2bfsjTXhA?start=17102&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>A Disclaimer then appeared onscreen at the end of the panel that said: \u201cAny opinions expressed by individuals on this panel are those of the individual, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the United States government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The cutting of the feed undermined the Biden administration\u2019s attempt to highlight Taiwan\u2019s inclusion in the U.S. summit, to which China was not invited.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the takeaway may be the attempted censorship of Taiwan to appease China, who was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/politico-china-watcher\/2021\/12\/02\/china-is-furious-about-bidens-democracy-summit-495283\">reportedly<\/a>&nbsp;already angry about not being invited.&nbsp;China has in the past expressed anger with private companies with products or marketing material that suggest Taiwan is a country separate from China.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Text__text___3eVx1j Text__dark-grey___AS2I_p Text__regular___Bh17t- Text__large___1i0u1F Body__base___25kqPt Body__large_body___3g04wK ArticleBody__element___3UrnEs\" data-testid=\"paragraph-10\">It is just the latest in a series of Biden administration gaffes on Taiwan.
