(ROBERTO SCHMIDT\/AFP via Getty Images)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not only about a state of mind in terms of this new approach, it\u2019s about restructuring a system,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Harris also spoke about the goal of \u201ceradicating the racial wealth divide,\u201d and \u201censuring equal access and equitable distribution of resources\u201d in the American economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the challenge of ensuring equal access and the equitable distribution of resources is the people need to know their rights,\u201d she said.<br \/>Harris said the coronavirus pandemic only added to concerns about whether \u201cfolks can trust the system, whether they can believe in the system, whether it is working for them, whether it sees them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Harris spoke of her effort to take on the big banks when she was the Attorney General of California during the foreclosure crisis with the help of Rep. Maxine Waters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s remember, that black and brown homebuyers were charged twice as much in terms of interest rates,\u201d she said, arguing that it made them twice as likely to get their homes foreclosed by banks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a very blatant cause and effect,\u201d she said with a laugh.<\/p>\n<p>During the event, the vice president spoke about the need for economic justice, claiming Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated because of his efforts to organize workers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was Dr. King, remember, who was organizing sanitation workers, who was, and I think, frankly, many of us do, that\u2019s part of why he was assassinated,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause he was starting to join the civil rights movement with economic justice movement.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vice President Kamala Harris called for an intentional restructuring of the country\u2019s economic systems on Tuesday, suggesting existing systems were inherently racist.
