Alareer reportedly asked his students who wrote it and the class agreed that only a Palestinian could have written such a piece, since they have been taught from birth that Israelis are oppressors and they are the oppressed. Alareer reportedly told them the \u201cbeautiful\u201d poem was written by an Israeli.<\/p>\n<p>The scene was witnessed by a Times reporter who wrote movingly of the episode, later contending that Alareer usually \u201cwrites furious barrages that describe Israel as a source of evil, posts that led to the suspension of his Twitter account.\u201d But, the Times insisted, Alareer does not bring this hatred into his classroom.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out, however, the Times was again fooled, as evidence by the lengthy Editor\u2019s Note now <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/11\/16\/world\/middleeast\/gaza-university-israel-poet.html?referringSource=articleShare\">attached<\/a> at the top of the story, though the headline has not been changed and the article has not been redacted (emphasis original):<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Editors\u2019 Note, Dec. 13, 2021:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>After publication of this article, Times editors reviewed additional information that is at odds with the article\u2019s portrayal of Refaat Alareer, a literature professor at Islamic University in Gaza, who was described as presenting Israeli poems in a positive light to his Palestinian students.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In the class witnessed by a Times reporter, Mr. Alareer taught a poem by the Israeli poet Yehuda Amichai, which he called \u201cbeautiful,\u201d saying it underscored the \u201cshared humanity\u201d of Israelis and Palestinians. He said he admired how it showed that Jerusalem is a place \u201cwhere we all come together, regardless of religion and faith.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>However, in a video of a class from 2019, he called the same poem \u201chorrible\u201d and \u201cdangerous,\u201d saying that although it was aesthetically beautiful, it \u201cbrainwashes\u201d readers by presenting the Israelis \u201cas innocent.\u201d He also discussed a second Israeli poem, by Tuvya Ruebner, which he called \u201cdangerous,\u201d adding \u201cthis kind of poetry is in part to blame for the ethnic cleansing and destruction of Palestine.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>When The Times asked Mr. Alareer about the discrepancy, he denied that there was a \u201csubstantial change\u201d in his teaching and said that showing parallels between Palestinians and Jews was his \u201cultimate goal.\u201d But he said that Israel used literature as \u201ca tool of colonialism and oppression\u201d and that this raised \u201clegitimate questions\u201d about Mr. Amichai\u2019s poem.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>In light of this additional information, editors have concluded that the article did not accurately reflect Mr. Alareer\u2019s views on Israeli poetry or how he teaches it. Had The Times done more extensive reporting on Mr. Alareer, the article would have presented a more complete picture.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The author of the Times article, Jerusalem bureau chief Patrick Kingsley, was recently mocked for a previous article in which he depicted Israelis as a sad people, leading to the pro-Israel Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting and Analysis (CAMERA) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.camera.org\/article\/new-york-times-ridiculed-with-viral-sadsadisrael-hashtag\/\">starting<\/a> a social media campaign titled \u201cSad Sad Israel,\u201d which went viral.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe&nbsp;<em>Times<\/em>\u2019s article seemed to be asking for ridicule,\u201d CAMERA analyst Gilead Ini said. \u201cAfter ten days of traveling throughout the country, Kingsley somehow only stumbled upon Israelis who viewed their country as a land of \u2018tensions,\u2019 \u2018inequities,\u2019 \u2018divisions,\u2019 \u2018unrest,\u2019 \u2018fury,\u2019 \u2018ambivalence,\u2019 \u2018illegitimacy,\u2019 \u2018alienation,\u2019 \u2018injustice,\u2019 \u2018discrimination,\u2019 \u2018bias,\u2019 and \u2018abuse,\u2019 with \u2018shabby,\u2019 \u2018tired,\u2019 and \u2018garish\u2019 towns\u2014and hardly a bright spot to be found.
