Manchin criticized the Democrats\u2019 strategy of implementing short-term plans into the bill, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/bidens-1-75-trillion-social-welfare-legislation-may-cost-nearly-5-trillion-if-programs-are-made-permanent\">multiple analyses<\/a> have found would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/build-back-better-critics-say-accounting-gimmicks-additional-irs-enforcement-hiding-real-cost-to-americans\">significantly increase<\/a> the costs of the bill if made permanent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shouldn\u2019t just be one year here, three years there, five years there,\u201d Manchin said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think everybody has to choose, basically, what we can sustain,\u201d he added. \u201cAnd that\u2019s a ten-year program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When asked by a reporter to confirm comments made by Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) about Manchin\u2019s \u201cstunned\u201d reaction to the Congressional Budget Office score and other analyses, Manchin said the conclusions of the CBO and the University of Pennsylvania\u2019s Wharton School of Business were \u201cvery sobering.\u201d He added that both the CBO and Wharton School were both reputable, non-partisan organizations with reputations for accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>Asked by another reporter whether he believed the temporary programs would stay temporary, Manchin said he didn\u2019t think so. \u201cI just don\u2019t think that\u2019s a fair evaluation, saying that we\u2019re going to spend x amount of dollars, but then we\u2019re going to have to depend on coming back, finding more money, so you might as well look at the whole ball of wax, if you will. And if that cost is 4, 4 and a half trillion [dollars], and we\u2019re raising [$1.5-1.7 trillion], whatever we\u2019re raising in that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I\u2019m concerned in paying down debt, too. So whatever we raise, I want to make sure there\u2019s money going towards paying down debt. We have to start taking care of our debt and being responsible. And then if we don\u2019t, if we\u2019re not transparent and accurate, then where does the money come from? Do we go back in another bite at more funding? Or do we just throw caution to the wind and have debt financing, which has been done by both parties for far too long,\u201d Manchin said.<\/p>\n<p>Manchin also voiced significant concern about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/breaking-inflation-skyrockets-to-6-8-higher-than-expected-fastest-rate-in-nearly-40-years\">rising inflation<\/a>. \u201cInflation is real, it\u2019s not transitory. It\u2019s alarming. It\u2019s going up, not down.
