The FAA updated the rules around who is classified as an \u201castronaut,\u201d in July of this year which excluded Branson and Bezos. Breitbart News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/tech\/2021\/07\/27\/faa-rule-change-strips-astronaut-title-from-jeff-bezos\/\">wrote at the time<\/a>:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"19.594594594595\">\n<p>The FAA has tightened the official definition of an astronaut, which strips Bezos and his fellow Blue Origin passengers of the term, as they have failed to meet the new criteria on their recent flights, according to a&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/bezos-space-flight-jeff-rocket-net-worth\/10910180\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">report<\/a>&nbsp;by ABC 7. Richard Branson would have also been stripped of the title based on his Virgin Galactic flight, but it occurred about a week before the rule change.<\/p>\n<p>Astronauts now have to be part of a crew that \u201cdemonstrated activities during flight that were essential to public safety, or contributed to human space flight safety,\u201d according to the FAA\u2019s&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/documentLibrary\/media\/Order\/FAA_Order_8800.2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">new rules<\/a>&nbsp;regarding the&nbsp;Commercial Space Astronaut Wings Program.<\/p>\n<p>The updates reportedly make for the first time the rules have been changed in 17 years.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The FAA claimed that Branson and Bezos did not conduct activities that&nbsp;\u201ccontributed to human space flight safety,\u201d which disqualified them. However, the FAA has since decided to include the two billionaires on the list of individuals who have FAA Commercial Space Astronaut Wings.<\/p>\n<p>The program was developed by the late Patti Grace Smith, the former Associate Administrator of the&nbsp;Office of Commercial Space Transportation of the FAA.
