Officials repeated that number despite <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/21\/how-many-people-state-department-evacuated-afghanistan-since-august-31\/\">confirmation<\/a> that more than 100 Americans were able to evacuate the country. Fewer than twelve Americans who remain in Afghanistan have contacted the State Department about leaving, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/afghanistan-relocation-and-resettlement-update\/\">according<\/a> to the statement.<\/p>\n<p>Administration officials frequently hedged their language about repatriation totals, saying that they were referring to Americans and green card holders who had reached out about returning to the U.S. At other times, officials claimed that they had no way of knowing how many Americans remained in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p>The State Department \u201ccan not know\u201d how many \u201chow many American citizens are in any country\u2026 precisely at any given moment\u201d because \u201cAmericans are not required to register when they go to a foreign country, or if they reside there,\u201d Secretary of State Antony Blinken <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/13\/antony-blinken-30-americans-unable-to-access-flights-afghanistan\/\">told<\/a> the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Sept. 13. <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/01\/state-department-ned-price-data-rescued-americans-taliban-joe-biden\/\"><strong>(RELATED: State Department Says It Doesn\u2019t \u2018Have Data\u2019 On Number Of Americas Rescued Since Last Kabul Flight)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7336163\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"38\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7336163\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">WASHINGTON, DC \u2013 SEPTEMBER 13: U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken testifies virtually in a House Foreign Affairs Committee on Capitol Hill on September 13, 2021 in Washington, DC. (Photo by Anna Moneymaker\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>President Joe Biden claimed on Aug. 31 that 90% of Americans were able to leave Afghanistan ahead of the Aug. 31 withdrawal deadline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSince March, we reached out 19 times to Americans in Afghanistan with multiple warnings and offers to help them leave Afghanistan,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/31\/joe-biden-americans-left-behind-afghanistan-kabul-evacuation\/\">said<\/a> at a press conference marking the withdrawal. \u201cAfter we started the evacuation 17 days ago, we did initial outreach and analysis, and identified around 5,000 Americans who had decided earlier to stay in Afghanistan, but now wanted to leave. Our Operation Allied Rescue ended up getting more than 5,500 Americans out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Close to 12,000 Americans remained in Afghanistan at the end of July 2021, internal Defense Department <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/24\/americans-evacuated-afghanistan-white-house-several-thousand-remain\/\">data<\/a> obtained exclusively by the Daily Caller showed. Executive branch officials struggled at times to coordinate departures with members of Congress working to extract constituents from Afghanistan, multiple lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/08\/17\/afghanistan-state-department-malliotakis-sasse-hinson-cotton\/\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many Americans, lawful permanent residents, and Afghan special immigrant visa (SIV) holders struggled to escape the Taliban, as insurgent forces surrounded Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul and prevented eligible individuals from leaving the country. After U.S. forces left Afghanistan, Taliban soldiers temporarily <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/05\/michael-mccaul-taliban-hostage-mazar-i-sharif\/\">held<\/a> up at least one plane carrying foreign nationals, including Americans, from taking off. Other Americans chose to <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/09\/10\/american-citizens-transported-out-kabul-afghanistan\/\">exit<\/a> Afghanistan through neighboring countries.<\/p>\n<p>More than 74,000 Afghans have been accepted into the U.S., the State Department added.
