Jared Polis (D) has declared the COVID-19 emergency \u201cover\u201d and said he will not be ordering another statewide mask mandate in response to respond to the emergence of the Omicron variant in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverybody had more than enough opportunity to get vaccinated,\u201d Polis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpr.org\/2021\/12\/10\/interview-gov-jared-polis-mask-mandates-covid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told<\/a> Colorado Public Radio on Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/12\/13\/colorado-gov-jared-polis-declares-covid-19-emergency-over-despite-omicron\/\">according<\/a> to the New York Post. \u201cHopefully it\u2019s been at your pharmacy, your grocery store, a bus near you, [or at] big events. At this point, if you haven\u2019t been vaccinated, it\u2019s really your own darn fault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThose who get sick, it\u2019s almost entirely their own darn fault,\u201d Polis added. \u201cI don\u2019t want to say that nobody [will get the virus if they\u2019re] vaccinated, but it\u2019s very rare. Just to put it in perspective, of the about 1400 people hospitalized, less than 200 (or 16 percent) are vaccinated. And many of them are older or have other conditions. Eighty-four percent of the people in our hospitals are unvaccinated, and they absolutely had every chance to get vaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd at this point, I think it\u2019s almost like they made a deliberate decision not to get vaccinated,\u201d the governor said. \u201cI still encourage everybody who hasn\u2019t been vaccinated to get protected. And for those who are, make sure to get that booster after six months. The data shows it\u2019s important and very likely even more so with this omicron variant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Polis said cities and counties in his state can institute mandates if they so choose, but added that the state will stay out of it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe emergency is over,\u201d he said. \u201cYou know, public health [officials] don\u2019t get to tell people what to wear; that\u2019s just not their job. Public health [officials] would say to always wear a mask because it decreases flu and decreases [other airborne illnesses]. But that\u2019s not something that you require; you don\u2019t tell people what to wear. You don\u2019t tell people to wear a jacket when they go out in winter and force them to [wear it]. If they get frostbite, it\u2019s their own darn fault,\u201d he said, according to the Post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you haven\u2019t been vaccinated, that\u2019s your choice. I respect that. But it\u2019s your fault when you\u2019re in the hospital with COVID,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Still, several Denver metro area counties have recently instituted new rules, including a \u201cvax or mask\u201d mandate, that require businesses to mandate masks indoors or require customers to provide proof they have been vaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>The governor\u2019s declaration came just before the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/cdc-just-43-cases-of-omicron-detected-this-month-in-u-s\">said<\/a> there were just 43 cases of Omicron detected in the U.S. during the first eight days of December.<\/p>\n<p>Among the small number, 34 were fully vaccinated against the COVID-19 virus and 14 had also received a booster shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSix had previously recovered from a COVID infection. Young adults under the age of 40 accounted for most of the Omicron cases, and there were no deaths among the group.\u201d the Daily Mail&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10301845\/Fauci-says-hes-continuing-evaluate-booster-needed-considered-fully-vaccinated.html\">reported<\/a>.
