Young adults under the age of 40 accounted for most of the Omicron cases, and there were no deaths among the group.\u201d the Daily Mail <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/news\/article-10301845\/Fauci-says-hes-continuing-evaluate-booster-needed-considered-fully-vaccinated.html\">reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Just one of those suffering from Omicron was briefly hospitalized.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Anthony Fauci, an immunologist and director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases who serves as President Joe Biden\u2019s chief medical adviser on COVID-19, now says \u201cthe early data indicates that Omicron may not pose as great a risk of serious illness as the Delta variant, but stressed that further information is needed before he can definitively confirm that,\u201d the Mail reported.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci said federal officials are \u201ccontinuing to evaluate\u201d whether to urge Americans to get a booster shot to be considered fully vaccinated for COVID-19. \u201cFor official requirements, it\u2019s still two shots of the mRNA and one shot of the J&amp;J for the official determination of what\u2019s required or not,\u201d Fauci told ABC News on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cBut I think if you look at the data, the more and more it becomes clear that if you want to be optimally protected you really should get a booster,\u201d Fauci added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think we\u2019ll be continuing to evaluate what the official designation is\u201d to be considered fully vaccinated, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Asked whether further annual boosters will be needed, Fauci said it was \u201ctough to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u201cIf it becomes necessary to get yet another boost, then we\u2019ll just have to deal with it when that occurs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Last Wednesday, Pfizer-BioNTech reported that initial results from studies examining how well their vaccine protects against a new coronavirus variant found that a booster shot \u2014 on top of a two-dose vaccine regimen \u2014 neutralizes Omicron in lab studies.<\/p>\n<p>The pharmaceutical company said that just two shots showed decreased protection in studies, but a booster dose significantly raises protection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the companies\u2019 preliminary data, a third dose provides a similar level of neutralizing antibodies to Omicron as is observed after two doses against wild-type and other variants that emerged before Omicron,\u201d they said in a press <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.biontech.de\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/pfizer-and-biontech-provide-update-omicron-variant\">release<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese antibody levels are associated with high efficacy against both the wild-type virus and these variants. A third dose also strongly increases CD8+ T cell levels against multiple spike protein epitopes, which are considered to correlate with the protection against severe disease. Compared to the wild-type virus, the vast majority of these epitopes remain unchanged in the Omicron spike variant,\u201d the release said.<\/p>\n<p>In plain English, blood samples from people who have had a booster showed \u201c25-fold higher levels of neutralizing antibodies against Omicron compared to blood serum from people immunized with just two doses,\u201d Time magazine <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6126612\/omicron-pfizer-booster\/\">reported<\/a>. \u201cEssentially, the booster brought levels of these virus-fighting antibodies back to those seen after two doses against the original virus strain.
