He maintains his innocence, and his attorney has said he will appeal the verdict.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">While the charges carry a possible sentence of three years in prison, legal experts have said Smollett is unlikely to get prison time for the low-level felonies, and is more likely to be sentenced to probation and ordered to perform community service. Judge James Linn didn\u2019t set a sentencing date, but scheduled a Jan. 27 hearing for post-trial motions and said he would schedule sentencing after that.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, lawsuits that were on hold pending the outcome of the criminal case may now move forward. They include a lawsuit the city of Chicago filed against Smollett to recoup over $130,000 it spent investigating what police initially believed was a terrible hate crime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">Here\u2019s a look at some remaining cases:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">CITY OF CHICAGO VS. SMOLLETT<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\"><strong><em>Watch below:&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Jussie Smollett convicted of staging attack, lies to police\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6IZC3ZufjHY?start=1&#038;feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">Chicago <a class href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jussie-smollett-north-america-lawsuits-us-news-ap-top-news-3e7aea12d53e4ccfaee483b9e46112e3\">sued Smollett<\/a> in April 2019, after he refused to pay $130,106.15 to reimburse the city for police overtime and other costs spent on the investigation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">The city <a class href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jussie-smollett-north-america-donald-trump-us-news-ap-top-news-ecfb965afdf7480882b6d0c7fd5ce656\">demanded the payment<\/a> shortly after the Cook County State\u2019s Attorney\u2019s office <a class href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jussie-smollett-police-us-news-ap-top-news-chicago-1cb151c45b714a749ebadf8e50910a0d\">dropped the original charges<\/a> against Smollett for lying to police about the attack. The move by State\u2019s Attorney Kim Foxx infuriated then-Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who lashed out at Smollett for dragging the city\u2019s reputation \u201cthrough the mud\u201d and wasting police resources on a hoax.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">The lawsuit says the city \u201cincurred significant costs\u201d investigating the high-profile alleged hate crime, and seeks reimbursement from Smollett for 1,836 hours of police overtime.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">A federal judge stayed proceedings pending the outcome of the criminal case after a special prosecutor investigated and <a class href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jussie-smollett-us-news-ap-top-news-indictments-chicago-ae6ecdc8dfa7b5af555071033b2b2a7b\">new charges<\/a> were filed against Smollett in February 2020.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_19111138\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" readability=\"34\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AP21343848586674.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19111138\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/AP21343848586674.jpg\" alt width=\"1723\" height=\"987\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>A jury convicted actor Jussie Smollett of five counts of disorderly conduct for staging a racist, anti-gay attack in Chicago and lying to police. (AP Graphic)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">In April 2020, U.S. District Court Judge Virginia Kendall also <a class href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-news-chicago-lawsuits-jussie-smollett-il-state-wire-09afde20a2c63a33a4e3d7bbd8d2752a\">dismissed<\/a> a countersuit <a class href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jussie-smollett-lawsuits-us-news-chicago-entertainment-ed1b06cd392b4cacb455cb9fbca50b20\">filed by Smollett<\/a> against the city, former Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson, detectives on the case and two brothers who told police he recruited them for the fake attack.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">His attorneys said Chicago couldn\u2019t go after Smollett for the cost of the investigation because the city accepted his $10,000 bail as \u201cpayment in full in connection with the dismissal of the charges against him\u201d when the original charges were dropped in 2019.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">Smollett\u2019s countersuit also said he was the victim of a malicious prosecution that caused him humiliation and extreme distress. They said Chicago police didn\u2019t have probable cause to arrest him for lying based off of \u201cunreliable\u201d accounts from Abimbola and Olabingo Osundairo, the brothers who <a class href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/entertainment-arts-and-entertainment-crime-chicago-hate-crimes-6650652906e528cd4a8bf9032ea370e1\">testified last week<\/a> that Smollett paid them $3,500 to help him with the hoax, and because police didn\u2019t pursue other evidence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">Kendall said in her ruling that Smollett could refile his suit if he was found not guilty in the criminal case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">In a statement after Thursday\u2019s guilty verdict, the city\u2019s law department said the decision \u201cconfirms that the City was correct\u201d in suing Smollett.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">\u201cThe City intends to continue to pursue its lawsuit to hold Smollett accountable for his unlawful actions and to demand that he compensate the City for costs incurred by the Chicago Police Department which took his false claims of harm seriously,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">A status hearing is scheduled for Dec. 16 in U.S. District Court in Chicago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">OSUNDAIRO BROTHERS\u2019 LAWSUIT<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">The Osundairo brothers, who were <a class href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/entertainment-arts-and-entertainment-crime-chicago-hate-crimes-6650652906e528cd4a8bf9032ea370e1\">star witnesses<\/a> for the prosecution at Smollett\u2019s trial, filed <a class href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jussie-smollett-north-america-lawsuits-us-news-ap-top-news-142b91f06c4d45938ca95f4060818b92\">their own lawsuit<\/a> in April 2019 accusing Smollett\u2019s attorneys of defamation and seeking unspecified financial damages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">They claimed that the attorneys accused the brothers of leading \u201ca criminally homophobic, racist and violent attack\u201d against Smollett, destroying their personal and professional reputations. The lawsuit named as defendants celebrity attorney Mark Geragos, lawyer Tina Glandian and Geragos\u2019 Los Angeles-based law firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">The lawsuit also stated that Glandian made public statements that Abimbola Osundairo is gay and participated in sex acts with Smollett. Osundairo said that was untrue, and noted that he has family in Nigeria and travels often to the country, where homosexuality is illegal and punishable by years in prison or even death. Osundairo said the lawyer\u2019s statements put his life and the lives of his family in danger.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">In a statement issued after the lawsuit was filed, Geragos and Glandian called it \u201cridiculous\u201d and \u201ca desperate attempt\u201d by the brothers \u201cto stay relevant and further profit from an attack they admit they perpetrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-203 Component-p-0-2-194\">A federal judge in Chicago put the case on hold until the completion of the Smollett trial and asked the parties to file a status report with the court by Feb. 1, 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>CHICAGO (AP) \u2014 A jury\u2019s guilty verdict that Jussie Smollett faked a racist and homophobic attack isn\u2019t the end of legal proceedings for the former \u201cEmpire\u201d actor or others.
