This was completely an internal overreaction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-15\">The State Department said \u201cconfusion\u201d over screen-sharing caused what it called \u201can honest mistake.\u201d A spokesperson for the State Department claimed, \u201cWe valued Minister Tang\u2019s participation, which showcased Taiwan\u2019s world-class expertise on issues of transparent governance, human rights, and countering disinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The slide show featured a color-coded map from South African NGO Civicus that ranked the world\u2019s countries vis-\u00e0-vis their record on civil rights. Taiwan was the only country in its geographic area colored green, meaning \u201copen,\u201d others were deemed &nbsp;\u201cclosed,\u201d \u201crepressed,\u201d \u201cobstructed\u201d or \u201cnarrowed.\u201d Communist China was deemed \u201cclosed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Minutes after the cut, the moderator returned to Tang, although there was still only audio. Later the screen stated, \u201cAny opinions expressed by individuals on this panel are those of the individual, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the United States government.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-10\">\u201cOne source told Reuters the map generated an instant email flurry among U.S. officials and the White House National Security Council (NSC) angrily contacted the State Department, concerned it appeared to show Taiwan as a distinct country,\u201d Reuters stated, \u201cWashington complained to Taiwan\u2019s government, which in turn was angry that Tang\u2019s video had been cut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-12\">A spokesman for President Biden\u2019s National Security Council protested that Reuters\u2019 account of that had transpired was \u201cinaccurate,\u201d claiming, \u201cAt no time did the White House direct that Minister Tang\u2019s video feed be cut.\u201d Taiwan\u2019s foreign ministry echoed that the snafu was due to \u201ctechnical problems,\u201d adding, \u201cTaiwan and the United States have fully communicated on this technical issue, and the two sides have a solid mutual trust and a solid and friendly relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-22\">\u201cOn most U.S. Government maps that show sovereignty tints, Taiwan is to be shown with the same color as China. Exceptions can be made only when context requires that Taiwan be specifically singled out,\u201d the State Department <a href=\"https:\/\/hiu.state.gov\/cartographic_guidance_bulletins\/37-Taiwan-2020.pdf\">declares<\/a> on one of its websites.<\/p>\n<p>In late October, Secretary of State Antony Blinken was <a href=\"https:\/\/dailywire.com\/news\/watch-antony-blinkens-surprising-answer-on-if-biden-will-defend-taiwan-if-china-invades\/\">asked<\/a> by CNN host Dana Bash, \u201cAre you now saying that the United States would not come to Taiwan\u2019s defense if attacked?
