Version: 4.0.47--><p class=\"subheading\">ROME \u2014 The head of the European Bishops\u2019 Conferences (COMECE) warned EU politicians this weekend that belittling Christians only serves to drive them toward populist parties.<\/p>\n<p>Discriminating against Christians and relegating religion to the private sphere is not \u201ca politically prudent move because this attitude can push Catholics towards populist parties,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.agensir.it\/quotidiano\/2021\/12\/10\/europa-card-hollerich-ai-politici-ue-discriminare-i-cattolici-significa-spingerli-verso-i-partiti-populisti\/\">said<\/a> Luxembourg Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich, president of COMECE and a progressive.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The Jesuit cardinal was replying to a question on \u201cinclusive\u201d communication guidelines <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/faith\/2021\/12\/02\/vatican-secretary-of-state-denounces-e-u-attempt-to-cancel-christmas\/\">drafted<\/a> by the European Commissioner for Equality, Helena Dalli of Malta, which recommended eliminating the use of Christian-specific language such as \u201cMerry Christmas,\u201d replacing it with \u201cHappy Holidays,\u201d and referring to the Christmas holidays as the \u201cwinter break.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fdesouche.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/guidelines-for-Inclusive-communication.pdf\">style guide<\/a>, titled \u201cEuropean Commission Guidelines for Inclusive Communication,\u201d stipulated language to be used by Commission employees for all communications including press releases, social media posts, speeches, and training materials.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Dalli, an LGBT activist, faced such an outcry that she was forced to retract the guidelines 24 hours after they were made public, insisting they were just a \u201cwork in progress.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_13370097\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"32\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/cq5dam.thumbnail.cropped.750.422.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13370097\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/cq5dam.thumbnail.cropped.750.422.png\" alt=\"Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich prays before the EU flag in Schengen (Vatican News)\" width=\"750\" height=\"422\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Cardinal Jean-Claude Hollerich prays before the E.U. flag in Schengen (Vatican News)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In his response, Cardinal Hollerich insisted that Pope Francis was right to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/faith\/2021\/12\/06\/pope-francis-slams-e-u-attempt-to-cancel-christmas\/\">describe<\/a> this attitude as \u201canachronistic,\u201d because \u201ctoday in Europe we have a multicultural identity and also a multireligious identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe answer to having many religions in Europe is not relegating religions to the private area but giving all religions access to the public sphere,\u201d he asserted. \u201cNot naming Christmas but using other idioms such as a winter holidays means putting into practice an unacceptable discrimination against Christians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is also a politically imprudent move because it pushes Catholics towards populist parties,\u201d Hollerich said. \u201cRather, we must encourage politicians not to be afraid of policies inspired by the Christian faith.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Catholics see these politicians, I think they won\u2019t fall into the trap of populist politicians who use the name of Christianity for their ideologies,\u201d he concluded.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tdwilliamsrome?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-show-count=\"false\">Follow @tdwilliamsrome<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ROME \u2014 The head of the European Bishops\u2019 Conferences (COMECE) warned EU politicians this weekend that belittling Christians only serves to drive them toward populist parties.
