The index\u2019s weekly loss came out to 3.3%, its worst since October. During Friday\u2019s session, the Dow shed more than 600 points, or about 2%, to close below 30,000 for the first time in six weeks, and the Nasdaq also sank by 2%.<\/p>\n<p>Shares of some of the heavily shorted stocks that had become popular picks among members of <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/game-stop-phenomena-is-about-the-poor-vs-rich-reddit-wsb-user-204822769.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:Reddit\u2019s r\/wallstreetbets forum surged anew;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-rapid_p=\"76\" data-v9y=\"1\">Reddit\u2019s r\/wallstreetbets forum surged anew<\/a> after sliding on Thursday. GameStop (<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/GME\" data-ylk=\"slk:GME\" data-rapid_p=\"77\" data-v9y=\"1\">GME<\/a>) shares rocketed higher by about 70% on Friday after nearly halving on Thursday. The stock closed at $65.01 per share a week ago, but by Friday\u2019s close, was higher by more than 400% to $328.24 per share. Shares of AMC (<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/AMC?p=AMC&amp;.tsrc=fin-srch\" data-ylk=\"slk:AMC\" data-rapid_p=\"78\" data-v9y=\"1\">AMC<\/a>) also soared Friday after plunging on Thursday, as did shares of BlackBerry (<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/BB\" data-ylk=\"slk:BB\" data-rapid_p=\"79\" data-v9y=\"1\">BB<\/a>), Express (<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/EXPR\" data-ylk=\"slk:EXPR\" data-rapid_p=\"80\" data-v9y=\"1\">EXPR<\/a>), Bed Bath &amp; Beyond (<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/BBBY\" data-ylk=\"slk:BBBY\" data-rapid_p=\"81\" data-v9y=\"1\">BBBY<\/a>) and Nokia (<a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/NOK?p=NOK&amp;.tsrc=fin-srch\" data-ylk=\"slk:NOK\" data-rapid_p=\"82\" data-v9y=\"1\">NOK<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Over the course of this week, trading in these and other heavily shorted names generated historic trading volumes in equity markets, surpassing even the volume of trades taking place at the most volatile points of the pandemic in 2020.
