Lindsey Graham (R-SC) why Republicans were willing to \u201cplay politics\u201d with raising the debt ceiling.<\/p>\n<p><em>Partial transcript as follows:<\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"28\">\n<p>WALLACE: But, you know, what we\u2019re talking about here is something a lot more serious than the process to set up the debt vote. If you \u2014 you don\u2019t raise the debt limit, the country defaults. If that happens, it tanks the markets. It has \u2014 it probably puts us in a recession. It means that things like Social Security checks and veterans benefits don\u2019t go out.<\/p>\n<p>GRAHAM: I understand all that.<\/p>\n<p>WALLACE: Do you really want to play politics with that?<\/p>\n<p>GRAHAM: Every time we raised the debt ceiling, we get something for it, generally speaking. I wanted to \u2014 to have some budget reforms. Nancy Pelosi, the last time we raised the debt ceiling on Trump\u2019s watch, wanted more spending. What we said as a party is, we\u2019re going to make them use the reconciliation process to raise the debt ceiling. The Democrats caused this problem. They needed to fix it. If you do it \u2014 if you help them, you\u2019re legitimizing this spending. So it really is not about the process as much as it\u2019s about keeping your word. We let a lot of people down. Senator McConnell\u2019s been a great leader on many things, but we\u2019re going into an election cycle where the wind\u2019s to our back.
