Gavin Newsom recently announced California will be a \u201csanctuary state\u201d for women seeking to abort their child in the wake of the Texas Heartbeat Act that protects the unborn. Now he wants&nbsp;to use the legislation as a template to put gun control laws in place.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas law not only prohibits abortion after a heartbeat is detected but also allows citizens to report violations of the law. California state officials are crafting a measure that would let residents seek damages of at least $10,000, plus legal fees, against gun manufacturers and retailers.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIf states can now shield their laws from review by the federal courts that compare assault weapons to Swiss Army knives,\u201d Newsom said in a press release issued on Saturday. \u201cThen California will use that authority to protect people\u2019s lives, where Texas used it to put women in harm\u2019s way.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIf the most efficient way to keep these devastating weapons off our streets is to add the threat of private lawsuits we should do just that,\u201d Newsom said.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.7730061349693\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">California Gov. But I think it\u2019s quite smart, right? I think it\u2019s a big \u2018F\u2014 you\u2019 to the Supreme Court,\u201d Jessica Levinson, identified as a Supreme Court expert who teaches constitutional law at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, told the <em>Chronicle<\/em>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But Levinson, who like others on the left vilified the Texas law as \u201cvigilante,\u201d is embracing the gun control strategy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn one case we might be comfortable with (the strategy) because we don\u2019t want assault weapons on the streets, and in the other case we might not be comfortable with it because we want women to be able to exercise their right to choose,\u201d Levinson said. \u201cIf you use it in one, then you really have to use it in another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Follow Penny Starr on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PennyStarrDC\">Twitter<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democrat Gov.
