That outlet has published inaccurate claims in the past, some of which <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/04\/23\/fact-check-stanford-university-study-masks-ineffective-adverse-health-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/12\/30\/fact-check-brad-raffensperger-brother-work-huawei\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">been<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2020\/07\/09\/fact-check-coronavirus-antibody-viral-test-cdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debunked<\/a> by Check Your Fact.<\/p>\n<p>In mid-November, Austria instituted restrictions on people who are not fully vaccinated against COVID-19, barring them from leaving their homes except for essential reasons, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/coronavirus-live-updates\/2021\/11\/15\/1055839727\/austria-and-germany-impose-restrictions-on-unvaccinated-people-as-covid-cases-su\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NPR<\/a> reported. Last week, the German government also announced a lockdown for unvaccinated individuals, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/02\/europe\/germany-lockdown-covid-restrictions-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But, contrary to the Instagram post\u2019s claim, von der Leyen did not call for \u201cthrowing out\u201d the Nuremberg Code \u201cin favor of forced vaccinating all dissenters.\u201d The claim appears to be a misrepresentation of comments she made during a <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/video\/I-215059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dec. 1 press conference<\/a> about addressing challenges related to COVID-19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is pure member state competence, therefore in respect to that, it\u2019s not me to give any kind of recommendation,\u201d von der Leyen said in response to a question about mandatory COVID-19 vaccination, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/video\/I-215059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">video<\/a> of the press conference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it is understandable and appropriate to lead this discussion right now, how we can encourage and potentially think about mandatory vaccination within the European Union,\u201d she <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/video\/I-215059\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said<\/a> a couple minutes later in the press conference. \u201cThis needs discussion, this needs a common approach, but it is a discussion that I think has to be led.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At no point in the press conference does she talk about the Nuremberg Code, a review by Check Your Fact found. A call for \u201cthrowing out\u201d the Nuremberg Code <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%22nuremberg%20code%22%20(from%3Avonderleyen)&amp;src=typed_query\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">also doesn\u2019t appear<\/a>&nbsp;on her verified Twitter account. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/10\/13\/fact-check-video-australians-cheering-gladys-berejiklian-resignation-soccer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Video Show Australians Cheering At Former New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian\u2019s Resignation?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Darragh Cassidy, a spokesperson for the European Commission, told Check Your Fact, \u201cNo, this is not true,\u201d when asked about the viral Instagram post\u2019s claim.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushmm.org\/information\/exhibitions\/online-exhibitions\/special-focus\/doctors-trial\/nuremberg-code\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nuremberg Code<\/a> was established in 1947 after World War II to protect people from involuntary and unethical medical experimentation. Its 10 points <a href=\"https:\/\/ori.hhs.gov\/content\/chapter-3-The-Protection-of-Human-Subjects-nuremberg-code-directives-human-experimentation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">can be found<\/a> on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services\u2019 Office of Research Integrity website. Other fact-checking organizations such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/factcheck-nuremberg-mandate\/fact-check-covid-19-public-health-measures-do-not-violate-nuremberg-code-covid-19-vaccines-are-not-experimental-idUSL1N2ST1XP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Reuters<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fact-checking-803459060082\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Associated Press<\/a> have addressed claims about COVID-19 vaccines and the Nuremberg Code in the past.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An image shared on Instagram claims Ursula von der Leyen, the president of the European Union\u2019s European Commission, called for \u201cthrowing out\u201d the Nuremberg Code.
