The claim stems from a satire article.<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>California has recently seen a spike in crime, specifically in Los Angeles, that some have attributed to Proposition 47 and the state\u2019s zero-bail system, Fox 11 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxla.com\/news\/lapd-detective-calls-california-the-purge-due-to-rise-in-crime\">reported<\/a>. The zero-bail policy allows suspects to be quickly released from custody and was implemented to limit jail populations during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/lapd-chief-michel-moore-crime-in-los-angeles-smash-and-grab-robberies\/11312810\/\">ABC 7<\/a>. Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courts.ca.gov\/prop47.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Proposition 47<\/a>, crimes such as theft and shoplifting are classified as misdemeanors instead of felonies if the value of the item does not exceed $950.<\/p>\n<p>Now, an image on Facebook shows what looks like a screen grab of a news article bearing the headline: \u201cCalifornia Store Owner Prices All Items at $951 So Thieves Can Be Prosecuted.\u201d Additional text in the image explains that there are coupons in the store that will bring the prices of the items back down to \u201cnormal.\u201d<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/10\/27\/fact-check-photo-tornado-wasco-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Does This Photo Show A Tornado In Wasco, California?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There is, however, no evidence of a shop owner raising all his prices to be able to prosecute thieves as felons. A search of California news outlets such as the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/search?q=store+owner+%24951\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Times<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ktla.com\/?s=store+owner+price+%24951&amp;submit=Search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">KTLA<\/a> turned up no articles about a store raising prices to $951. Nor did a wider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Store+owner+California+raises+price+to+%24951&amp;source=lnms&amp;tbm=nws&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwjE65Kxjtr0AhXtUt8KHdu0CmYQ_AUoAXoECAEQAw&amp;biw=1850&amp;bih=1024&amp;dpr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">internet search<\/a> turn up any results of such an incident taking place in California.<\/p>\n<p>Check Your Fact found the screen grabbed <a href=\"https:\/\/thegloriousamerican.com\/law\/california-store-owner-prices-all-items-at-951-so-thieves-can-be-prosecuted-11-28-21\/\">article<\/a> published on The Glorious American.
