Ron DeSantis (R) on Thursday unveiled a proposal that would allow businesses the option to pay state fees with&nbsp;cryptocurrencies as part of&nbsp;the state\u2019s budget for next year.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2021\/12\/09\/florida-governor-ron-desantis-businesses-fees-crypto\/\"><em>Fortune Magazine<\/em><\/a> reports:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"18\">\n<p>Speaking Thursday in Tallahassee, DeSantis also said the state would launch pilot programs to explore the use of blockchain technology for Medicaid payments and vehicle titles, with the latter running through the Department of Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>DeSantis, a Republican, is trying to harness Florida\u2019s growing reputation as an emerging destination for crypto investment. He said crypto enthusiasts have flocked to South Florida, where officials and business boosters have embraced the industry. Even the Miami Heat\u2019s basketball stadium was rebranded during the pandemic as FTX Arena, after the cryptocurrency exchange platform run by billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cOur view as the state government is this is something that we welcome and we want to make sure that the state government is crypto-friendly,\u201d DeSantis said of the plan.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Florida is home to one of the country\u2019s most crypto-friendly cities in the U.S. \u2014 Miami \u2014 where&nbsp;Mayor Francis Suarez\u2019s (R) hands on approach has helped attract a flurry of start-ups and venture capitalists from&nbsp;San Francisco and around the country. Miami plans to provide a \u201cbitcoin yield\u201d from the staking of its own cryptocurrency \u2014 MiamiCoin \u2014 to residents.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/business\/2021\/11\/11\/miami-to-give-bitcoin-yield-from-miamicoin-to-its-citizens\/\">CoinDesk<\/a> notes:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"10.707100591716\">\n<p>The yield comes from the staking of the city\u2019s own cryptocurrency,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.coindesk.com\/tech\/2021\/06\/08\/miami-coin-and-voting-with-your-tokens\/\">MiamiCoin<\/a>, which was introduced early this year and has already earned over $21 million in the past three months for Miami. Suarez noted that if you were to annualize that revenue, it would equal roughly one-fifth of Miami\u2019s total annual tax revenue of $400 million.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Additionally, Suarez said he plans to take his entire salary in bitcoin.<\/p>\n<p>However, the rapid growth of the Miami\u2019s&nbsp;technology scene is also in large part due to&nbsp;DeSantis\u2019 decision not to enact strict coronavirus mandates \u2014 unlike California, which has seen many Silicon Valley residents leave due to restrictions and rising taxes and crime.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, DeSantis reaffirmed his opposition to lockdowns as cases of the Omicron variant rise across the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn Florida, we won\u2019t let them lock ya down, we won\u2019t let them restrict you, we\u2019re not gonna let them impose mandates, we\u2019re not gonna let them close the schools,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/desantis-vows-no-lockdowns-or-mandates-over-reports-of-omicron-in-state\">said<\/a> following a speech near Tampa Bay.&nbsp;\u201cWe are gonna protect your freedom to make your decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida Gov.
