He was 78.<\/p>\n<p>Nesmith died Friday&nbsp;at his home of \u201cnatural causes,\u201d according to a family <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/monkees-michael-nesmith-dead-1270079\/\">statement<\/a> sent to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em> magazine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWith infinite love we announce that Michael Nesmith has passed away this morning in his home, surrounded by family, peacefully and of natural causes,\u201d his family said in the statement. \u201cWe ask that you respect our privacy at this time and we thank you for the love and light that all of you have shown him and us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Houston native who spoke with a thick Texas accent, Nesmith stood out to his fans with his&nbsp;assortments of wool hats that he frequently wore while performing. He penned&nbsp;many of the Monkee\u2019s most enduring songs, including \u201cMary, Mary\u201d and \u201cCircle Sky.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Watch below:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Monkees - Mary Mary 1967\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/AMNize7s8nc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Nesmith fought for the band to&nbsp;write its own songs and retain creative control of its albums, according to <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were kids with our own taste in music and were happier performing songs we liked \u2013 and\/or wrote \u2013 than songs that were handed to us,\u201d he told the magazine in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt made for a better performance. It was more fun. That this became a bone of contention seemed strange to me, and I think to some extent to each of us \u2014 sort of \u201cWhat\u2019s the big deal, why won\u2019t you let us play the songs we are singing?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After the Monkeees broke up in the late 60s, Nesmith\u2019s career foundered for years.
