(Scott Olson\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The committee has used its built-in subpoena powers to&nbsp;<a title=\"This external link will open in a new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/01\/republicans-slam-january-6-select-committees-harassment-of-law-abiding-trump-staffers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">target<\/a>&nbsp;dozens of mainly Trump officials as it investigates the chain of events that led to the January 6 riot at the U.S. Capitol. Republicans have, however, almost universally dismissed the committee as one-sided after Pelosi, who agreed to consult with House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to establish bipartisan committee membership, refused two of his member selections.<\/p>\n<p>Miller is looking to replace outgoing Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH), one of the ten Republican defectors who voted in January to impeach Trump over the riot.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzalez announced he would not seek reelection in September, which Trump viewed as a victory after endorsing Miller, a move that follows Trump\u2019s pattern of backing candidates who challenge those who voted to impeach him.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16936934\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"34\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-1231650745.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16936934\" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/GettyImages-1231650745.png\" alt=\"Rep. (Bill Clark\/CQ-Roll Call via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Trump said in a statement at the time of Gonzalez\u2019s retirement announcement, \u201cThis is no loss for Ohio or our Country and, most importantly, we have a great candidate who was substantially leading Gonzalez in the polls, Max Miller, who I have given my Complete and Total Endorsement,\u201d adding, \u201cGood riddance to Anthony, he can now get himself a job at ratings-dead CNN or MSDNC!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>Miller is running in Ohio\u2019s 13 Congressional District, the newly formed district essentially replacing Gonzalez\u2019s 16th Congressional District following the decennial redistricting process.<\/p>\n<p>As the&nbsp;<em>Plain Dealer\u2019s<\/em>&nbsp;Sabrina Eaton&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" title=\"This external link will open in a new window\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/news\/2021\/12\/republican-shay-hawkins-announces-congressional-bid-in-swing-congressional-district-hell-face-trump-backed-max-miller-in-gop-primary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">noted<\/a>, the newly drawn lines for the 13th District include the Cleveland suburbs Akron and Medina, and the district will be one of the most competitive in the state, shifting from \u201cpredominantly Republican\u201d to leaning \u201cslightly towards Democrats.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Miller on Wednesday was&nbsp;<a class=\"x5l\" title=\"This external link will open in a new window\" href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/forms\/C00796797\/1550968\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dealt<\/a>&nbsp;a new primary opponent in the race, former state House candidate Shay Hawkins.<\/p>\n<p>Just ahead of Hawkins\u2019 formal campaign <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Shay_Hawkins_OH\/status\/1468605620320407554?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launch<\/a>, text messages from a Cleveland-area number began circulating tying Hawkins to Gonzalez and prominent Never Trumper and impeachment voter Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY), sparking questions about Hawkins\u2019 backers and his stance on Trump\u2019s impeachment in January.<\/p>\n<p>One text read, \u201cWe need a fighter like Liz Cheney to represent Valley City in Congress not another Trumpy, Jim Jordan-type candidate! Stand with Anthony Gonzalez &amp; his campaign team as we DRAFT Shay Hawkins to run for Congress!!\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B4\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<div id=\"attachment_19078442\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"32\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/texts2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-19078442 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/texts2.jpg\" alt=\"Hawkins text\" width=\"393\" height=\"357\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">(obtained by Breitbart News)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hawkins told Breitbart News on Thursday that the texts do not align with his views and that he believes those who sent the messages sought to damage his campaign. \u201cIt\u2019s very clear those messages were not sent by anyone who wants me to run. \u2026 Those were sent out by people who were afraid I was going to run in an effort to link me to Anthony Gonzalez.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 16th District voted for Trump over President Joe Biden by double digits, signaling that even though the new 13th District is less friendly toward Republicans, it will still have a substantial share of Trump voters.<\/p>\n<p>Hawkins contended, \u201cThink about it. The anti-Trump texts only went to known Trump supporters.\u201d He assessed that \u201cevery person who got it was someone who would respond negatively to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hawkins said he has been a supporter of Trump for years and that he would not have voted to impeach him. He called the vote divisive and \u201cpolitical in nature\u201d and said Gonzalez voting in favor of it was \u201cdisappointing.\u201d Hawkins said he knows Gonzalez personally and clarified, \u201cI had no disagreement with him prior to that at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Miller and Hawkins will compete in the Republican primary in May of next year ahead of the November general election.<\/p>\n<p><em>Write to Ashley Oliver at <a href=\"mailto:aoliver@breitbart.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">aoliver@breitbart.com<\/a>.
