Delta was the latest and most dominant strain of \u201cCovid-19,\u201d or the Chinese coronavirus, to date until Omicron <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deccanherald.com\/international\/botswana-detects-19-cases-of-the-omicron-covid-variant-1055615.html\">emerged<\/a> in the southern African nation of Botswana in mid-November.<\/p>\n<p>Delta emerged in India in December 2020 and has since become the most common SARS CoV-2 variant worldwide. The strain \u201cis believed to be more than twice as contagious as previous variants,\u201d Yale Medicine <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yalemedicine.org\/news\/5-things-to-know-delta-variant-covid\">reported<\/a> on November 19. Delta is capable of penetrating the immunity of people fully vaccinated against the Chinese coronavirus, among whom it has caused an increasing number of \u201cbreakthrough\u201d infections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[D]ata also has shown the variant [Delta] to have increased transmissibility even among some vaccinated people,\u201d Yale Medicine noted.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201c[I]f a vaccinated person is infected with COVID-19 (in what\u2019s called a \u2018breakthrough\u2019 case) and they have symptoms, they can transmit the virus to others,\u201d the health news site noted, citing data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).<\/p>\n<p>Data has emerged in recent weeks out of southern Africa indicating Omicron may be more contagious than Delta.<\/p>\n<p>The data suggests Omicron is \u201cefficiently transmitting, and probably more efficiently transmitting even than the Delta variant,\u201d Michael Ryan, the executive director of the W.H.O.\u2019s Health Emergencies Programme, told reporters at Wednesday\u2019s press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>Despite Omicron\u2019s seemingly high rate of transmissibility, the virus strain appears to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/healthcare-pharmaceuticals\/botswana-says-no-rise-hospitalisation-omicron-70-vaccinated-2021-12-08\/\">correlate<\/a> with a low rate of hospitalization in southern Africa so far.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cData which looked at hospitalizations across South Africa between 14 November and 4 December found that ICU occupancy was only 6.3 percent \u2013 which is very low compared with the same period when the country was facing the peak linked to the Delta variant in July,\u201d the W.H.O. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afro.who.int\/news\/omicron-spreads-severe-cases-remain-low-south-africa\">reported<\/a> on December 9.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cData from the same two-week period from one of the health districts most impacted by Omicron found that out of more than 1,200 admissions, 98 were receiving supplemental oxygen and only four were on ventilation,\u201d the U.N. health agency revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (N.I.A.I.D.), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/live-news\/20211207-omicron-variant-almost-certainly-not-more-severe-than-delta-fauci-tells-afp\">said<\/a> Tuesday preliminary studies of Omicron suggest the variant is likely to cause mild illness. Speaking to Agence France-Press (AFP) on December 7, Fauci said the severity of illness caused by Omicron \u201calmost certainly is not more severe than Delta.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is some suggestion that it might even be less severe [than Delta], because when you look at some of the cohorts that are being followed in South Africa, the ratio between the number of infections and the number of hospitalizations seems to be less than with Delta,\u201d he acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCovid patients infected by the Omicron variant, whether vaccinated or not, usually experience mild symptoms, though in the unvaccinated, they are more intense and last longer,\u201d South African Dr. Angelique Coetzee <a href=\"https:\/\/theprint.in\/health\/omicron-symptoms-mild-with-or-without-vaccination-says-south-africa-doctor-who-flagged-variant\/778804\/\">told<\/a> the Print, an Indian news site, on December 9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[M]ost of the [Omicron] cases are mild, no need for hospitalization. No oxygen needed for majority patients,\u201d she revealed.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Angelique Coetzee was the first physician to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/africa\/2021\/12\/07\/south-african-omicron-discoverer-laments-knee-jerk-biden-style-travel-bans\/\">detect<\/a> Omicron while treating one of her patients in November in South Africa.
