Laidlaw, M.D. and colleagues wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article-abstract\/106\/12\/e5275\/6326472\">letter<\/a> to the editor of the <em>Journal of Clinical Endocrinology &amp; Metabolism (JCEM) <\/em>regarding a <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jcem\/article\/106\/6\/1710\/6138195\">study<\/a> by Milou C. Madsen, et al, published in the journal in February.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>The study, which attempted to measure the risk of erythrocytosis, an increase in the number of red blood cells due to the administration of testosterone to females seeking to transition to male, uses a methodology that leads to \u201ca significant undercount of patients who may ultimately be at risk for cardiovascular events,\u201d Laidlaw et al assert in their letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our opinion,&nbsp;the study by Madsen et al. in <em>JCEM<\/em>&nbsp;hides the true numbers of trans males at risk for high red blood cell counts and therefore cardiovascular harms,\u201d the authors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gendersanity.org\/\">write&nbsp;<\/a>at website Gender Sanity.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.2560975609756\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Conservative news and commentary site PJ Media reports that Twitter locked its account for calling Rachel Levine, the transgender assistant secretary for health, a male. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LHAamX00Zg\">https:\/\/t.co\/LHAamX00Zg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartNews\/status\/1455984929452531721?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 3, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>They explain differing red blood cells lab measures for the two sexes:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"13.791044776119\">\n<p>Males and females have&nbsp;different laboratory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/tests-procedures\/hematocrit\/about\/pac-20384728\">ranges<\/a> for hematocrit&nbsp;(red blood cells).<\/p>\n<p>For adult men the range is 38.3 to 48.6 percent.<\/p>\n<p>For adult women the range is 35.5 to 44.9 percent.<\/p>\n<p>High testosterone levels can directly cause high levels of hematocrit.<\/p>\n<p>Females who identify as trans males are given very high doses of testosterone to attempt to bring their testosterone levels into the male range.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWomen who identify as trans males are being given very high, very risky doses of testosterone,\u201d Laidlaw explained to Breitbart News about his concerns. \u201cThese high doses lead to high red blood cell counts. High red blood cell counts can lead to heart attacks and death. We believe these risks are being hidden.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMales and females have different normal ranges for red blood cell counts,\u201d he elaborated. \u201cWe believe that the authors\u2019 use of the male range for females hides a large number of females who will be at risk for heart disease and death.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laidlaw and colleagues, Andre Van Mol, M.D.,&nbsp;Quentin Van Meter,&nbsp;M.D., and Jeffrey E Hansen, Ph.D., note results of the 1994 landmark Framingham <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/8122618\/\">study<\/a> which showed \u201chaving high red blood cell counts (erythrocytosis) puts females at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease and death due to both.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudies of trans males have already <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30950651\/\">shown<\/a> up to a&nbsp;nearly five fold increased risk of myocardial&nbsp;infarction compared to females not taking testosterone,\u201d the doctors explain at Gender Sanity, adding:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote readability=\"9\">\n<p>In the study we have critiqued, the authors use what is considered very high hemoglobin levels in males (greater than 50) for trans males (females).
