However, journalist Bill Scher noted that \u201cYes\u201d has a difficult challenge ahead in the unlikely event it pulls out a victory.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"11.302752293578\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">So Sawant did a bit better than this estimate after the late arrivals were counted. Political science professor Mark Alan Smith of the University of Washington <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.q13fox.com\/news\/socialist-kshama-sawant-faces-recall-vote-in-seattle\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">told<\/a> Fox 13&nbsp;that Sawant\u2019s status as a polarizing figure had fueled the turnout beyond normal levels.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Sawant has a history of beating out her opponents after an early loss.&nbsp;In September 2019, for instance, Sawant \u201cchallenger Egan Orion <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/crosscut.com\/2019\/11\/sawant-trails-after-early-results-moderate-sweep-unlikely-seattle-city-council\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">led<\/a> by eight percentage points on election night, only to <a href=\"https:\/\/crosscut.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/recall-sawant-effort-holds-razor-thin-lead-oust-city-council-member\">lose<\/a> decisively in later returns,\u201d according to&nbsp;Crosscut.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of Sawant celebrated her lead on Twitter.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.421768707483\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The campaign to recall Kshama Sawant got their contribution cap lifted so their backers could donate endless gobs of money AND secured a special election date so that working-class people would be less likely to vote. And they still lost!! During the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) episode of 2020,&nbsp;Sawant <a class=\"x5l\" href=\"https:\/\/komonews.com\/news\/local\/councilwoman-sawant-says-chaz-should-be-permanently-in-community-control\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external\">said<\/a>&nbsp;the area should be \u201cpermanently\u201d in community control.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur movement needs to urgently ensure East Precinct is not handed back to police, but is turned over permanently into community control,\u201d she tweeted. \u201cMy office is bringing legislation to convert East Precinct into a community center for restorative justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"11.5\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Our movement needs to urgently ensure East Precinct is not handed back to police, but is turned over permanently into community control.<\/p>\n<p>My office is bringing legislation to convert East Precinct into a community center for restorative justice. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YGSOG0MXU3\">https:\/\/t.co\/YGSOG0MXU3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Kshama Sawant (@cmkshama) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cmkshama\/status\/1271304890472529921?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 12, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Opponents of the recall against Sawant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.workers.org\/2021\/11\/60305\/\">characterized<\/a> the campaign as a racist attack against a fighter for the working class:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"18\">\n<p>The recall campaign has filed three charges against Sawant, which are racist and&nbsp; have to do with her being a pro-working-class activist and not a typical bureaucrat or \u201cpro-boss\u201d politician. The first charge against her is that she led a march to Mayor Durkan\u2019s house, whose address is protected. Other forces led it; she did not.<\/p>\n<p>The second charge is that Sawant threatened public safety by opening City Hall to Black Lives Matter protesters during a pandemic. However, the rally was very COVID-safe. And the final charge is that Sawant allegedly misused public funds to support a ballot initiative named \u201cTax Amazon.\u201d In fact, this was a small sum, which was spent months before the initiative was even filed.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Despite Kshama Sawant\u2019s likely victory, Seattle made a major shift this past November when the city <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seattletimes.com\/seattle-news\/politics\/republican-ann-davison-defeats-nicole-thomas-kennedy-to-become-seattles-first-woman-city-attorney\/\">elected<\/a>&nbsp;law &amp; order Republican Ann Davison as City Attorney, following the violence that pervaded throughout Seattle during the 2020 Black Lives Matter riots.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Seattle Socialist City Councilmember Kshama Sawant may survive her recall election after all, with the latest ballot count putting her narrowly in the lead by just over 200 votes.
