Marie Newman (D., Ill.) \u2014 Wikimedia Commons\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\t\t\t<span class=\"text-gray text-xs md:text-lg\"><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/author\/collin-anderson\/\" title=\"Posts by Collin Anderson\" class=\"author url fn text-red-700\" rel=\"author\">Collin Anderson<\/a> \u2022 December 9, 2021 5:50 pm<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<div readability=\"70.929276315789\">\n<p><span>The House Ethics Committee is investigating Democrat Marie Newman after the Illinois congresswoman admitted in court that she promised a six-figure job to a potential political rival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The committee announced the investigation in a Thursday afternoon <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ethics.house.gov\/press-releases\/statement-chairman-and-ranking-member-committee-ethics-regarding-representative-marie\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>press release<\/span><\/a><span>, which comes roughly six months after Newman <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/illinois-dem-admits-to-bribing-prospective-opponent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>settled<\/span><\/a><span> a breach of contract lawsuit with local Palestinian activist Iymen Chehade. During the case, Newman&#8217;s taxpayer-funded attorneys conceded to a federal judge that the Democrat signed an employment agreement that assured Chehade a top job in her office should she win election to Congress, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/Newman-concession.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>legal filings<\/span><\/a><span> show. Chehade&#8217;s attorneys argued that Newman extended the offer as a bribe to keep the activist out of a 2020 primary race.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>&#8220;Chehade foreseeably relied on this promise by refraining from running for office, and he then lost the opportunity \u2026 to serve in a congressional position in her office,&#8221; his attorneys said. Newman&#8217;s contract promised Chehade a senior role in the Democrat&#8217;s office that did not require him to &#8220;maintain specific hours at the office,&#8221; paid him a $140,000 salary, and gave him &#8220;complete discretion about the selection and employment termination of staff members under his supervision.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Newman&#8217;s office acknowledged the investigation in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ChrisMarquette_\/status\/1469045200110641158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>statement<\/span><\/a><span>, noting that the committee&#8217;s inquiry stems from a &#8220;dismissed lawsuit.&#8221; But that lawsuit was dismissed &#8220;by agreement&#8221; following Newman&#8217;s settlement with Chehade, the Democrat&#8217;s office <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/democrats\/illinois-dem-admits-to-bribing-prospective-opponent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>confirmed<\/span><\/a><span> in July. At that time, Foundation for Accountability and Civic Trust executive director Kendra Arnold told the <\/span><i><span>Washington Free Beacon<\/span><\/i><span> that congressional investigators could use facts from the civil case against Newman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span id=\"m_2676317225135498049gmail-docs-internal-guid-fd2a686f-7fff-88cf-812a-1a7acf7334e4\">&#8220;Civil liability and government ethics and criminal liability are two completely separate things. The civil court case is between her and the individual,&#8221; said Arnold, who in May <a href=\"https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/elections\/watchdog-group-targets-illinois-dems-alleged-political-bribe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/freebeacon.com\/elections\/watchdog-group-targets-illinois-dems-alleged-political-bribe\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1639174302142000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3OAH8eD4hmniXjPTLou8zv\">filed a complaint<\/a> against Newman with the Office of Congressional Ethics. &#8220;Whether they resolve their personal differences has nothing to do with the ethics case and her issues with the federal government.
