The jury ended the day\u2019s deliberations by 5 p.m. local time and resumed at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>A Fox News&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/entertainment\/jussie-smollett-testimony-jury-convict-legal-experts\">report<\/a> following Smollett\u2019s testimony on Tuesday noted his words likely did more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSmollett testifying in his own defense is one of two things, or maybe both: a narcissistic criminal defendant who is doubling down on his charged lies to law enforcement or defense attorneys who know they are way behind and are throwing a low probability Hail Mary to try to get their client off,\u201d former U.S. attorney Neama Rahmani, who is not involved with Smollett\u2019s case, told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEither way, Smollett\u2019s story was a bizarre attempt at forcing a square peg into a round hole by offering every possible explanation for the state\u2019s digital evidence except the most obvious one: that he is guilty. In the unlikely event he is acquitted, Smollett\u2019s decision was a genius move. But it is far more likely that the jury sees through his ruse and Smollett is convicted. If so, the judge may sentence him to prison time for obstructing justice and perjuring himself on the witness stand,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As The Daily Wire previously&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/jussie-smollett-defense-rests-after-actor-gets-testy-with-prosecutors-its-not-fair\">reported<\/a>, \u201cSmollett is facing six felony charges of disorderly conduct for filing false police reports. The charges carry a potential jail sentence of up to three years. Smollett is expected to escape lockup if found guilty, however. Because nobody was physically hurt by his alleged crime and his lack of a criminal history, experts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jussie-smollett-trial-chicago-charges-d5f6081f7755b841a878952889d29feb\">expect<\/a>&nbsp;that Smollett would receive probation and community service if found guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smollett has been accused of hiring two African brothers, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, to stage a hate crime against him back in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Smollett initially tried to mislead police about the alleged attackers\u2019 race, while law enforcement <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jussie-smollett-music-police-us-news-eddie-johnson-fac8abf87fa4431aaf0e0abce6f67c22\">claimed<\/a> the actor used \u201cthe symbolism of a noose to make false allegations\u201d when he told detectives that the suspects looped a rope around his neck.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have proven [that he is guilty] by overwhelming evidence,\u201d Special Prosecutor Dan Webb&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.cbslocal.com\/2021\/12\/08\/jussie-smollett-trial-closing-arguments-begin-wednesday\/\">said<\/a>&nbsp;Wednesday afternoon. He added that the entire ordeal was \u201cjust plain wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo outright denigrate something as serious, as heinous, as a real hate crime \u2014 to denigrate it and then make sure it involved words and symbols that have such horrible historical significance in the history our country,\u201d Webb added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was hoping the Osundairo brothers would not cooperate with the police,\u201d Webb said. \u201cHe got exposed, and now we\u2019re in a trial.
