Russian troops have been amassing on the Ukrainian border for weeks, and Biden has threatened Putin with economic sanctions should he choose to invade. U.S. officials&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/09\/biden-russia-ukraine-putin\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reportedly planned<\/a> to advise Ukraine to grant autonomy to the eastern Donbas region, which has been under control of Russia-backed separatists since 2014, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/joe-biden-russia-ukraine-europe-vladimir-putin-8193787ec21ca2aded4a37fa325f07b5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to The Associated Press.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are some reports that the U.S. is pressuring Ukraine to cede land to Russia as a way to deter them from invading. Is that true?\u201d a reporter asked.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, that\u2019s absolutely false,\u201d Psaki responded.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"White House press secretary Jen Psaki holds news conference (FULL - 12\/9)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oXhOLIkoq8g?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Reporters went on to ask Psaki whether Biden\u2019s strategy for avoiding an invasion was working, given Russian troops continue to amass on the Ukrainian border. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/07\/biden-putin-ukraine-russia-sasse-haley-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: EXCLUSIVE: \u2018Speak Loudly And Carry A Small Stick\u2019: Republicans Blast Biden\u2019s Response To Putin\u2019s Escalation In Ukraine)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be up to President Putin to make a decision about whether he is going to invade Ukraine and send a message to the global community that he does not respect the territorial integrity of a country when the United States and our European partners are sending a clear message that there will be significant economic consequences, severe economic consequences,\u201d Psaki responded.<\/p>\n<p>Biden has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/08\/joe-biden-sending-us-troops-ukraine-not-on-table\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previously confirmed<\/a>&nbsp;that deploying U.S. troops to help Ukraine fend off an invasion is not on the table,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/07\/joe-biden-russian-vladimir-putin-ukraine-economic-harm-sanctions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">focusing instead on economic sanctions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a moral obligation and a legal obligation to our NATO allies if they were to attack under Article 5, it\u2019s a sacred obligation,\u201d Biden said Tuesday. \u201cThat obligation does not extend to NATO \u2013 I mean to Ukraine. But it would depend upon what the rest of the NATO countries were willing to do as well. But the idea that the United States is going to unilaterally use force to confront Russia invading Ukraine is not in the cards right now. What will happen is there will be severe consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some of the president\u2019s critics have argued his stance on Ukraine is projecting a message of weakness to the world, and particularly to China. Reporters pressed the White House on the message Biden\u2019s Ukraine response may send to China at Tuesday\u2019s press briefing. China has long mirrored Russia\u2019s aggression toward Ukraine with its own threats to retake Taiwan by force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome observers have described a nightmare scenario where President Putin invades Ukraine and also simultaneously President Xi uses force to reunify Taiwan with China. Is the U.S. prepared to deal with such a scenario?\u201d a reporter&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=y4EoJAGDt30\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">asked national security adviser Jake Sullivan.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe United States is going to take every action that we can take, from the point of view of both deterrence and diplomacy, to make sure that the Taiwan scenario you just described never happens, and to try to avert the invasion into Ukraine,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cThat is the object of our policy right now.
