Ironically, the legislation, which <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/07\/house-passes-defense-bill-moves-to-lift-debt-ceiling-after-bipartisan-agreement-national-defense-authorization-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">passed the House on near party lines<\/a> Tuesday, required 60 votes to overcome a filibuster, and passed after 14 Republicans joined Democrats in advancing it.<\/p>\n<p>The provision was the product of a deal struck Tuesday between Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell. Under it, Congress would pass a law allowing the debt ceiling to be raised with a simple majority this one time, and the bill\u2019s passage puts the limit on a glade path to be lifted by Democrats alone ahead of Dec. 15, when Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned a default could occur.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the responsible path forward,\u201d Schumer said on the floor ahead of the vote. \u201cNo brinkmanship, no default on the debt, no risk of another recession.\u201d&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/12\/07\/house-passes-defense-bill-moves-to-lift-debt-ceiling-after-bipartisan-agreement-national-defense-authorization-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: House Moves To Lift Debt Ceiling After Deal Between Schumer, McConnell)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7334588\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" readability=\"33\">\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-7334588\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer speaks on the phone as he arrives at the Capitol Wednesday morning. (Anna Moneymaker\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Despite the deal\u2019s endorsement from McConnell and several top Senate Republicans, others in the caucus adamantly opposed it, arguing that it undermined their party\u2019s longstanding vow to force Democrats to lift the limit as part of their reconciliation bill.<\/p>\n<p>During a closed door GOP lunch Wednesday, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham described the deal as if leadership \u201cled them on a charge up a hill and they were getting shot in the back,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/585018-graham-warns-gop-about-trumps-wrath-on-debt-vote?rl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">according<\/a> to one senator who shared the remark with The Hill. Graham also warned that it would incur the wrath of former President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly criticized McConnell over not using the risk of a catastrophic default as leverage.<\/p>\n<p>Even with the intraparty disagreements among Republicans, the deal is a sharp departure from the fall, when Republicans, including McConnell, were insistent that Democrats attach a debt ceiling increase to their tax and spending package. That standoff fizzled, however, when McConnell agreed to a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailycaller.com\/2021\/10\/06\/mitch-mcconnell-democrats-debt-ceiling-extension-default\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">short-term increase<\/a> that staved off a default on the nation\u2019s nearly $29 trillion debt as Congress worked on reaching a longer-term compromise.<\/p>\n<p>McConnell, however, defended the agreement after he announced it, saying that it was in the best interest of the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think this is in the best interest of the country by avoiding default,\u201d McConnel said Tuesday, The Hill <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/senate\/584810-mcconnell-faces-gop-pushback-on-debt-deal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reported<\/a>. \u201cI think it is also in the best interest of Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Content created by The Daily Caller News Foundation is available without charge to any eligible news publisher that can provide a large audience.
