Even now, the case is still finding ways to disappoint.<\/p>\n<p>It appears that in 2017, federal investigators began looking into whether Till\u2019s accuser, Carolyn Bryant Donham, admitted to lying about what, if anything, actually happened between her and Till. That investigation ended Monday, NBC News <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/justice-department-closes-inquiry-murder-emmett-finds-no-proof-accuser-rcna7806?utm_source=facebook&amp;utm_medium=news_tab\">reported<\/a>, with the U.S. Department of Justice apparently failing to find evidence that Donham had lied. From the outlet:<\/p>\n<p><em>Donham was reported to have&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/nbcblk\/emmett-till-book-prompts-cousins-call-new-investigation-n713341\">recanted<\/a>&nbsp;her story to the author&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.simonandschuster.com\/authors\/Timothy-B-Tyson\/408396534\">Timothy B. Tyson<\/a>, telling him she lied about the incident.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNothing that boy did could ever justify what happened to him,\u201d she was alleged to have told Tyson while describing her \u201csorrow\u201d for Till\u2019s mother.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>But Donham denied to federal investigators that she lied in her testimony, a source with knowledge of the case said, and there were inconsistencies with statements made by Tyson. Justice Department officials plan to release a memo after they brief Till\u2019s family in Chicago, the source added.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tyson, of course, stands by his reporting, telling the outlet that Donham was not a reliable witness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCarolyn Bryant denies it and avoids talking about it like it was the plague,\u201d Tyson said. \u201cI am standing in the public square telling the truth as I see it based on solid evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that nothing he reported was new, since \u201cwe have long known she was lying.\u201d He told NBC that his book contained pages of documented evidence that the FBI collected when it had re-opened the Till case in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet us just look at the evidence as if I had never talked to Carolyn,\u201d Tyson said.&nbsp;\u201cThat she lied in court does not depend on her admission of it to me, not at all.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/case-document\/emmett-till-notice-close-file-0\">said<\/a> it found no evidence Donham had ever lied, closing the case without any arrests. In its case document, the DOJ said it could not prosecute Donham or anyone else because it had \u201cnot uncovered any new evidence that would change its conclusion from its 2004 investigation that it was not able to bring federal charges against [Donham] in connection with Till\u2019s abduction and murder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another issue the DOJ faced was that the statute of limitations has run out for all \u201cpotential federal crimes that could apply to Till\u2019s abduction and murder, and there is no other potential basis for federal jurisdiction,\u201d the Department said. This includes prosecuting Donham for allegedly lying on the stand or making false allegations against Till.<\/p>\n<p>Till was brutally beaten and shot in the head by J.W. Milam and Roy Bryant, Donham\u2019s then-husband, after she made the allegations against him.
