I don\u2019t want to get in trouble,&#8217;\u201d Maribel Duarte, the mother of a 13-year-old boy who was clandestinely vaccinated, told NBC4.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>According to Duarte, her son was offered pizza in exchange for the shot.<\/p>\n<p>But attorney Jennifer Kennedy, who is fighting the school district\u2019s vaccine mandate in court, contends children cannot consent to receiving a vaccine, saying, \u201cyou [LAUSD] don\u2019t have the legal authority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to NBC4, \u201cLAUSD says student matters are confidential and wouldn\u2019t comment specifically, but did say its \u2018safe schools to safe steps incentive program\u2019 is meant to ensure several steps are in place for vaccinated students to receive prizes.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Duarte, while being pro-vaccine and vaccinated herself, says she was uncomfortable with the move because her son \u201chas problems with asthma and allergy problems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt hurt to know he got a shot without my permission, without knowing and without signing any papers for him to get the shot,\u201d Duarte told NBC4.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"8.2191780821918\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Absolutely appalling.<\/p>\n<p>The government should not be circumventing parents like this. <\/p>\n<p>Parents need to know (and consent) to their child getting the vaccine. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/aNuUQdsNOw\">https:\/\/t.co\/aNuUQdsNOw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tedcruz\/status\/1468426939107004420?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 8, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>LAUSD Interim Superintendent Meagan K. Reilly <a href=\"https:\/\/achieve.lausd.net\/site\/default.aspx?PageType=3&amp;DomainID=4&amp;ModuleInstanceID=4466&amp;ViewID=6446EE88-D30C-497E-9316-3F8874B3E108&amp;RenderLoc=0&amp;FlexDataID=110710&amp;PageID=1\">said<\/a> in the September mandate announcement, \u201cThe science is clear \u2013 vaccinations are an essential part of protection against COVID-19.&nbsp;The COVID-19 vaccines are safe, effective and requiring eligible students to be vaccinated is the strongest way to protect our school community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur goal is to keep kids and teachers as safe as possible, and in the classroom,\u201d LAUSD school board Vice President Nick Melvoin said. \u201cA medical and scientific consensus has emerged that the best way to protect everyone in our schools and communities is for all those who are eligible to get vaccinated. This policy is the best way to make that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One school board member added, \u201cwe continue to battle a deadly global pandemic. If requiring the vaccine for eligible students will continue to keep them safe, why not do it? Students need stability, support, and to be in a classroom learning with their peers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to NBC4, LAUSD announced that, as of Thanksgiving, 80 percent of students at Obama Prep had received the vaccine. It also warned that \u201cthose who don\u2019t get it and don\u2019t have a legal exemption, will be forced back into virtual, online learning,\u201d despite the mental, physical, and other developmental issues that accompany virtual learning.<\/p>\n<p><em>Breccan F.
