Safeway also added poles to its shopping carts to make them difficult to remove from the store\u2026 It closed off a side exit, and added a wall of water bottles \u2014 directing customers to the front exit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHonestly, I think it\u2019s probably good that they did that cause there was a really bad shoplifting problem almost every single time I came here, there was some type of ruckus happening,\u201d one customer said to the outlet. \u201cLots of times there was people running and security following or trying to stop them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to a statement from Safeway: \u201cLike other local businesses, we are working on ways to curtail escalating theft to ensure the wellbeing of our employees and to foster a welcoming environment for our customers. Their safety remains our top priority. These long-planned security improvements were implemented with those goals in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to retailers, KPIX 5 and other news outlets have not been safe from the frequent robberies. In March, KPIX 5 reporter Don Ford was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/reporter-robbed-at-gunpoint-while-filming-television-segment-on-robberies-in-san-francisco-report\">robbed<\/a> at gunpoint while filming a segment about car robberies in the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe car came up here while we were about to do an interview, three guys jumped out. One had a gun and put [it] in my face and said, \u2018We\u2019re taking the camera,\u2019\u201d Ford recalled. \u201cMy whole thought at the moment was, \u2018Be calm.\u2019 Let\u2019s not get this guy excited. He\u2019s got the gun. I don\u2019t. So you take you the camera. It\u2019s yours, buddy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a security guard named Kevin Nishita was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/security-guard-murdered-while-protecting-news-team-covering-smash-and-grab-robbery\">murdered<\/a> while protecting a news team reporting on a \u201cflash mob\u201d theft in San Francisco. When an assailant tried to steal KRON 4\u2019s camera equipment, Nishita was shot in the abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe victim is Kevin Nishita. He leaves behind a wife, two children and three grandchildren,\u201d explained KRON 4. \u201cNishita worked as an armed guard for Star Protection Agency. Prior to working as a guard, he served as a police officer at the Oakland Housing Authority, Hayward Police, San Jose Police, and the Colma Police departments.
