In fact, it can be (and has been) argued that CNN and The New York Times had as much to do with electing Trump president as did Fox News and The Wall Street Journal. Trump was ratings gold that even the far-Left networks and \u201cnews\u201d outlets couldn\u2019t resist.<\/p>\n<p>But after four years of negative coverage \u2014 Trump apparently just couldn\u2019t do anything right \u2014 Joe Biden was able to harness the mainstream media in a way even Hillary Clinton was unable to do. The MSM simply held its nose and applauded Uncle Joe\u2019s every utterance (a year later, of course, it turns out Biden is almost wholly unsuited for the job, but hey).<\/p>\n<p>In a few weeks, it\u2019ll be 2022, and 11 months after that, Americans will once again go to the polls, this time to select all 435 members of the House of Representatives and a third of the U.S. Senate. So the question now is: Can Democrats really run against Trump, who will have been out of the White House for two years, chilling down in Mar-a-Lago?<\/p>\n<p>Trump longs to be a kingmaker: He\u2019s already endorsed dozens and dozens of candidates running for office in 2022. As always, he\u2019s hoping for wall-to-wall coverage of his every utterance. But Democrats have another thing coming if they think they can just hit the campaign trail, say \u201cTrump! Trump! Trump!\u201d and win.<\/p>\n<p>Take Virginia 2021. Trump endorsed Republican gubernatorial candidate Glenn Youngkin not once, but three times. But Youngkin walked a tightrope throughout the campaign. He accepted the endorsements. Then he kept Trump at arm\u2019s length.<\/p>\n<p>As his Democratic opponent, Terry McAuliffe, brought in a string of heavy hitters \u2014 President Joe Biden (twice), former President Barack Obama, first lady Jill Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris \u2014 Youngkin didn\u2019t invite Trump or other national party leaders and even steered clear of an 11th-hour telephone rally headlined by Trump.<\/p>\n<p>CNN\u2019s Chief Resident Liberal Chris Cillizza said this week that \u201ctying Republican candidates to former President Donald Trump won\u2019t save Democrats from a midterm Armageddon,\u201d citing a \u201cprominent party pollster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf our most effective message in 2022 is that Republicans = Trump, we\u2019re going to get creamed,\u201d wrote pollster Brian Stryker, a partner in the Democratic firm Anzalone Liszt Grove Research, in a memo for the centrist think tank Third Way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStryker drew that conclusion based on a series of focus groups with suburban Virginia voters who voted for Democrat Joe Biden in 2020 and either voted for (or strongly considered voting for) Republican Gov.-elect Glenn Youngkin last month,\u201d Cillizza wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe thing that these people disliked about Trump was that they didn\u2019t like Donald Trump, the person; it wasn\u2019t Donald Trump the constellation of policies,\u201d Stryker told The New York Times. While McAuliffe, Obama, and Biden sought endlessly to connect Trump to Youngkin, \u201cthe respondents kind of laughed at that approach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey said, \u2018Oh, these silly ads that compared Youngkin to Trump \u2014 he just doesn\u2019t seem like that guy,\u2019\u201d Stryker said.<\/p>\n<p>When asked by the Times what he would say to Democrats running in 2022, he said, \u201cI would tell them that we have a problem. We\u2019ve got a national branding problem that is probably deeper than a lot of people suspect. Our party thinks maybe some things we\u2019re saying aren\u2019t cutting through, but I think it\u2019s much deeper than that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Biden\u2019s polls are in the dumpster. Soaring inflation, sky-high gas prices, supply chain woes, rising crime in cities, a blundering departure from Afghanistan, and a dwindling approval rating abroad may abate by next November. Still, voters are notorious for having short memories, even as some economists say it could turn around by next November.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJobs numbers, wage numbers, and the number of people we\u2019ve put back to work don\u2019t move them,\u201d Stryker said. \u201cWe should still talk about these \u2026 but we should realize that they will have limited impact when people are seeing help wanted signs all over main street, restaurant sections closed for lack of workers, rising prices, and supply disruptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, even trying to focus on good news might not work. \u201cEven where things are getting better, Biden doesn\u2019t get credit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>And one last thing: Stryker says 2020 voters didn\u2019t reject Trump\u2019s policies. They rejected the man who was maligned for four years in the mainstream media.<\/p>\n<p>Trump won\u2019t be on the ballot in 2022, even though Democrats wish he would be.
