It was created for a photoshop contest centered around \u201cbad ads.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Fact Check:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the 1930s and 40s, before clear links between smoking and lung cancer had been discovered, tobacco companies used a variety of methods to sell their products to as many consumers as possible, including claims that tobacco was good for your health, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2018\/09\/12\/these-are-the-insane-adverts-that-told-people-smoking-was-good-for-them-7936951\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Metro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One image claims to show an old Winston cigarette ad targeting pregnant women. The ad includes an alleged testimonial from a pregnant woman that reads, \u201cPeople are always telling me that smoking causes low birth weight. Talk about a win-win-win! An easy labor, a slim baby, and the Full Flavor of Winstons!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smoking while pregnant can have a number of negative health effects on the baby, including low birth weight, which can lead to other serious health issues for the child, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/tobacco\/basic_information\/health_effects\/pregnancy\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/checkyourfact.com\/2021\/11\/17\/fact-check-germany-ad-food-insecurity-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">(RELATED: Did Germany Make This Ad About Food Insecurity In America?)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though Winston cigarettes were, according to the company\u2019s website, first introduced by the <a href=\"https:\/\/rjrt.com\/transforming-tobacco\/history\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">R.J. Reynolds Tobacco<\/a> company in 1954, there is no evidence the company ever created the ad shared on Facebook.<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong>The ad could not be found in a collection of \u201coutrageous vintage cigarette ads,\u201d compiled by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pictures\/outrageous-vintage-cigarette-ads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CBS News<\/a> in 2014, nor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/vintage-tobacco-adverts-that-would-be-illegal-today-2016-6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Business Insiders\u2019<\/a> 2016 list of \u201coutrageous tobacco ads that would be illegal today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uoguelph.ca\/lang\/people\/timothy-dewhirst\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Timothy Dewhirst<\/a>, a professor at the University of Guelph with a research focus on internal tobacco industry documents, noted in an email to Check Your Fact that the Surgeon General\u2019s warning featured on the alleged advertisement would only be included in cigarette ads from the 1980s and later, while the ad\u2019s creative design appears to be from the 1950s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Surgeon General\u2019s warning, as seen, reflects a specific health warning because of U.S. Congress enacting the Comprehensive Smoking Education Act of 1984 (Public Law 98\u2013474),\u201d explained Dewhirst. \u201cSo, the use of this warning would normally suggest an ad from the mid-1980s or later.&nbsp; Yet, the creative of the alleged ad does not match this period, and the scrutiny an advertiser would likely face for attempting such claims at this time makes it unlikely that the alleged Winston ad is genuine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/med.stanford.edu\/news\/all-news\/2019\/02\/5-questions-robert-jackler-says-juul-spurs-nicotine-arms-race.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Jackler<\/a>, a professor at Stanford University and the founder of a group called the Stanford Research Into the Impact of Tobacco Advertising, concurred with Dewhirst\u2019s conclusion, telling Check Your Fact in an email that the ad is a \u201cspoof\u201d and \u201cnot a genuine Winston ad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through a reverse image search, Check Your Fact found the image actually stems from a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.designcrowd.com\/community\/contest.aspx?id=1671803\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bad Ad<\/a>\u201d photoshop contest hosted by the website DesignCrowd in 2012. \u201cIn tonight\u2019s contest, your task is to create a failed ad campaign- a parody of an ad that wasn\u2019t quite right in one way or another, as in the themepost,\u201d reads the contest\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.designcrowd.com\/community\/contest.aspx?id=1671803\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">rules<\/a>.
