The charges carry a potential jail sentence of up to three years. Smollett is expected to escape lockup if found guilty, however. Because nobody was physically hurt by his alleged crime and his lack of a criminal history, experts <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jussie-smollett-trial-chicago-charges-d5f6081f7755b841a878952889d29feb\">expect<\/a> that Smollett would receive probation and community service if found guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smollett has been accused of hiring two African brothers, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, to stage a hate crime against him back in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have proven [that he is guilty] by overwhelming evidence,\u201d Special Prosecutor Dan Webb <a href=\"https:\/\/chicago.cbslocal.com\/2021\/12\/08\/jussie-smollett-trial-closing-arguments-begin-wednesday\/\">said<\/a> Wednesday afternoon. He added that the entire ordeal was \u201cjust plain wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo outright denigrate something as serious, as heinous, as a real hate crime \u2014 to denigrate it and then make sure it involved words and symbols that have such horrible historical significance in the history our country,\u201d Webb added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was hoping the Osundairo brothers would not cooperate with the police,\u201d Webb said. \u201cHe got exposed, and now we\u2019re in a trial. That\u2019s what happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The case has captivated America as the Hollywood actor has defended himself against accusations from nearly three years ago that he staged a fake crime early in the morning on a cold January night. He claimed that he was beaten down by thugs calling him the n-word and yelling homophobic slurs while saying this is \u201cMAGA country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smollett had previously told media he believed he was attacked because he \u201ccame at [President Trump] really hard.\u201d He has maintained he really was attacked that night, despite the doubts of many.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/08\/us\/jussie-smollett-closings\/index.html\">reported<\/a> by CNN, \u201cHe was&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/03\/08\/entertainment\/jussie-smollett-indictment\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">initially indicted<\/a>&nbsp;on 16 counts of felony disorderly conduct in March 2019, but the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2019\/03\/26\/entertainment\/jussie-smollett-charges-dropped\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">charges were dropped weeks<\/a> later.
