Jacob Candelaria changed his party affiliation from Democrat to \u201cdecline to state\u201d on Monday following a controversy regarding the state\u2019s new Senate map redistricting.<\/p>\n<p>The Santa Fe Mexican <a href=\"https:\/\/www.santafenewmexican.com\/news\/local_news\/democratic-lawmaker-announces-party-affiliation-change-on-first-day-of-special-session\/article_c2566a4c-56cd-11ec-b0b6-775c089eb24e.html\">reported<\/a> the change regarding what it called his \u201csurprise announcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone can look at the events of Jan. 6 or many of the unconstitutional acts of this governor and not conclude that this partisan virus is starting to affect who we are as a country,\u201d Candelaria said, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think that the decisions we make should be based on partisan ambitions, and it broke my heart to see already that the Senate maps deliberately dilute and gerrymander the west side of Albuquerque to preserve perceived partisan advantage for some members of the Democratic Party,\u201d he added. \u201cYou would strip representation from people that I represent, many of whom are Hispanic, simply because it benefits you at the ballot box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a statement to <a href=\"https:\/\/nmpoliticalreport.com\/2021\/12\/06\/sen-candelaria-leaves-dem-party-registers-as-independent\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NM Political Report<\/a> on the issue, Candelaria added, \u201cPartisanship is a virus that\u2019s ripping our country apart,\u201d Candelaria said. \u201cI\u2019ll no longer be a part of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">NEW MEXICO.
