Our human and person-centred approach means that we continue to be concerned about her personal situation and will continue to support her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, the IOC appears to be walking back their previous statements on Peng\u2019s situation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t provide you with absolute certainty on anything,\u201d IOC spokesman Mark Adams said according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/olympics\/story\/_\/id\/32816774\/ioc-says-give-assurances-amid-concern-peng-shuai\">ESPN<\/a>. \u201cAll we can do is do the best we can in the process that we believe is in the best interests of the well-being of the athlete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adams\u2019 comment came on Tuesday at the IOC\u2019s first press conference since the Women\u2019s Tennis Association suspended all tournaments in China \u2014 including in Hong Kong \u2014 last week. The committee has been subject to criticism regarding their handling of Peng\u2019s situation, with Human Rights Watch accusing the IOC of \u201ccollaboration with Chinese authorities on tennis star Peng Shuai\u2019s reappearance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe IOC has vaulted itself from silence about Beijing\u2019s abysmal human rights record to active collaboration with Chinese authorities in undermining freedom of speech and disregarding alleged sexual assault,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2021\/11\/22\/olympics-dont-promote-chinese-state-propaganda\">said<\/a> Yaqiu Wang, senior China researcher at Human Rights Watch. \u201cThe IOC appears to prize its relationship with a major human rights violator over the rights and safety of Olympic athletes.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the IOC wants to credibly claim it\u2019s a \u2018force for good,\u2019 it needs to stop participating in the Chinese government\u2019s repressive practices,\u201d Wang <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hrw.org\/news\/2021\/11\/22\/olympics-dont-promote-chinese-state-propaganda\">said<\/a>. \u201cThe IOC should instead be standing up for human rights and the freedom and safety of athletes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the IOC\u2019s first call with Peng, Bach said he invited Peng to a dinner when he arrives in Beijing in January, an invitation which Peng \u201cgladly accepted.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can\u2019t give assurances and we don\u2019t know the full facts,\u201d Adams said on Tuesday. \u201cIt\u2019s a full road map to at least attempt to keep in touch and to see where she is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On November 2, Peng posted to Chinese social media that former Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli sexually assaulted her three years ago following a round of tennis, while Zhang\u2019s wife guarded the door. Her post was deleted nearly 30 minutes after publication and Peng\u2019s Weibo account \u2014 a Chinese social media platform \u2014 was blocked from searchers on the platform.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She was not heard from publicly until a November 17 statement attributed to Peng was shared on Twitter by CGTN \u2014 a Chinese state-affiliated media company \u2014 where Peng denied her claim that Zhang sexually assaulted her.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the Biden administration announced an official diplomatic boycott of the Beijing Winter Olympics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Biden administration will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, given the PRC\u2019s ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity,\u201d White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki told media.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Morgan is the Sports Reporter for The Daily Wire.
