But most importantly, they are treatable, and often preventable.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cAdvisories are reserved for significant public health challenges that need the nation\u2019s immediate awareness and action,\u201d the document said<\/p>\n<p>Murthy issued the advisory the day after he visited King\/Drew Magnet High School of Medicine and Science in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles where students said they have struggled during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people still feel like, everything is virtual, like, they act as if we can\u2019t see or hear what they say,\u201d Jesus El, a senior at the school said in a <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> report. \u201cA lot of students have been less motivated to come to school, you know, miss school more. I\u2019m noticing a lot more students start to leave class and take long bathroom breaks.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>The <em>Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2021-12-07\/surgeon-general-advisory-youth-mental-health-crisis-looms\">reported<\/a> on some of the statistics behind the claims about young people\u2019s struggle:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"25\">\n<p>Symptoms of depression and anxiety have doubled during the pandemic, with 25 percent f youth experiencing depressive symptoms and 20 percent experiencing anxiety symptoms, according to Murthy\u2019s 53-page advisory. There also appear to be increases in negative emotions or behaviors such as impulsivity and irritability \u2014 associated with conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder or ADHD.<\/p>\n<p>And, in early 2021, emergency department visits in the United States for suspected suicide attempts were 51% higher for adolescent girls and 4% higher for adolescent boys compared to the same time period in early 2019, according to research cited in the advisory.<\/p>\n<p>Even before the pandemic, children from all backgrounds faced serious mental health challenges, Murthy said. But nearly two years of disruption took a toll and worsened their mental health \u2014 especially for such groups as immigrants, students with disabilities and students of color from low-income families.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The report also said that isolated young people make it \u201charder to recognize signs of child abuse, mental health concerns, and other challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The L.A. Unified School District has shortage of mental health professionals with a staffing goal falling short 500 social workers, according to the <em>Times<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The national average of caseloads for school counselors was 424 students per counselor for the 2019-20 school year. Professional guidelines recommend 250 students per counselor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne good thing is that people are asking for help and trying to offer it to one another, even informally and without professional expertise,\u201d school board member Tanya Ortiz Franklin said in the <em>Times<\/em> report. \u201cBut we are also recognizing the deep need for professional expertise.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\" readability=\"9.3563218390805\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The UK\u2019s envoy to the World Health Organization (W.H.O.) has condemned mass coronavirus lockdowns, slamming the \u201cghastly global catastrophe\u201d caused by crashing the world economy. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XT0n8fz3bY\">https:\/\/t.co\/XT0n8fz3bY<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Breitbart News (@BreitbartNews) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BreitbartNews\/status\/1315495208742719488?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 12, 2020<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe surgeon general has limited direct power, but traditionally speaks with medical expertise as the voice of the executive branch \u2014 a role that can be magnified by the individual in the office and the issues that person takes on,\u201d the <em>Times<\/em> reported. \u201cThe surgeon general\u2019s warning on tobacco products is a well-known example.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is the second advisory issued by Murthy serving under President Joe Biden. The first was about the \u201curgent threat\u201d of \u201cmedical misinformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is also Murthy\u2019s second time as Surgeon General. He was appointed by President Barack Obama and served at the post from 2014 to 2017.<\/p>\n<p>The recommendations made in the advisory included:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"38\">\n<p>\u2022 Create positive, safe, and affirming school environments.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Expand social and emotional learning programs and other evidence-based approaches that promote healthy development.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Learn how to recognize signs of changes in mental and physical health among students, including trauma and behavior changes.
