class=\"subheading\">President Joe Biden warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that he would be tougher than former President Barack Obama on the issue of Ukraine, as the two leaders spoke on a video call on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>After the meeting, Biden\u2019s national security advisor Jake Sullivan said the president warned Putin not to repeat his incursion into Ukrainian territory after he annexed Crimea in 2014 when Obama was president and Biden was vice president.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI will look you in the eye and tell you as President Biden looked President Putin in the eye and told him today, that things we did not do in 2014, we are prepared to do now,\u201d Sullivan told reporters during the daily press briefing.<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan said Biden would deploy \u201cclear and decisive\u201d actions, including economic sanctions to punish Russia if they invaded Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe measures we have put on the table are designed to show the Russian Government that should it choose to engage in such an invasion there will be those consequences,\u201d he said,<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>Biden\u2019s staff did not permit journalists to witness the beginning of the call or take pictures of the event, but they issued a readout afterward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Biden reiterated his support for Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity and called for de-escalation and a return to diplomacy,\u201d the White House said after the call.<\/p>\n<p>The Kremlin released a photo of the meeting via Sputnik, which showed Putin sitting in front of a video monitor screen with Biden waving at him.<\/p>\n<p>Biden sought out the call as intelligence showed that Putin was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/news\/explainer-whats-behind-russia-ukraine-tensions\/\">escalating<\/a> the build-up of military forces on the Russia\/Ukraine border.<\/p>\n<p>The White House said Biden \u201cvoiced the deep concerns of the United States and our European Allies about Russia\u2019s escalation of forces surrounding Ukraine\u201d during the call.<\/p>\n<p>Putin continues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/world\/europe\/biden-putin-meeting-nato-ukraine\/2021\/12\/06\/71225812-5677-11ec-8396-5552bef55c3c_story.html\">demanding<\/a> that Ukraine not be allowed to join the NATO alliance, an assertion considered a non-starter by United States.<\/p>\n<p>Biden warned Putin the United States and its allies would respond with \u201cstrong economic and other measures\u201d if he escalated a military conflict with Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p>The White House also said Biden discussed ransomware and the issue of Iran pursuing a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe two presidents tasked their teams to follow up, and the U.S. will do so in close coordination with allies and partners,\u201d the readout
