It doesn\u2019t itself raise the debt ceiling. Instead, it sets up a procedure for an additional vote on the issue that would require a simple majority in the Senate rather than the 60 votes needed for most legislation.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I believe we\u2019ve reached here a solution to the debt ceiling issue that\u2019s consistent with Republican views of raising the debt ceiling for this amount at this particular time and allows the Democrats to proudly own it, which they\u2019re happy to do,\u201d McConnell said.<\/p>\n<p>Politico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2021\/12\/07\/mcconnell-gop-raise-debt-limit-523878\">reported<\/a> earlier in the afternoon, \u201cAfter a leadership meeting and a Senate GOP lunch, McConnell said he\u2019d done enough work to clinch the deal in a vote expected on Thursday.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThere are always differences of opinion among Republicans about how to handle a delicate issue like the debt ceiling,\u201d McConnell told the press earlier. \u201cI\u2019m confident that this particular procedure coupled with the avoidance of Medicare cuts will receive enough Republican support to clear the 60-vote threshold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Senator John Cornyn (R-TX) voiced his approval earlier in the day, saying, \u201cI\u2019m going to support Democrats raising the debt ceiling without Republican votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">He added, \u201cTo have Democrats raise the debt ceiling and be held accountable for racking up the debt is my goal. And this helps us accomplish it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, not all Republicans initially appeared to be in support of the measure. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) said, \u201cI don\u2019t think there will be 10 Republican votes to allow the Democrats to raise the debt ceiling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Politico also reported that Graham \u201cprotested a provision attached to the debt limit rule change, which would prevent automatic cuts to Medicare from kicking in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI don\u2019t like this idea of tying it to Medicare. I don\u2019t like that much at all,\u201d Graham noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The measure would make Democrats increase the debt ceiling to a certain amount rather than just prolong it for a certain period of time. The \u201cfast-track process\u201d would also run out after January 15th, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/12\/07\/politics\/debt-limit-deal-mcconnell-schumer\/index.html\">CNN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Politico reported, \u201cThe debt increase would likely range from $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion to ensure Congress won\u2019t have to address the debt again before November midterms, according to several people familiar with the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Republicans have been steadfast in their desire to see Democrats expand the debt limit rather than do so with Republican support.
