But Poland, where similar anti-democratic forces have been on the rise for years, did get an invite. One likely reason? The United States saw fit to stand by the country as it faces aggressive moves along its border from Russian-backed Belarus.<\/p>\n<div data-qa=\"drop-cap-letter\" readability=\"9\">\n<p class=\"font-copy font--article-body gray-darkest ma-0 pb-md\" data-el=\"text\">The Hungarian Embassy in Washington said the Biden administration\u2019s move to leave Hungary out was \u201cdisrespectful,\u201d per The Washington Post.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cHungarian-American relations were at their peak during the Trump presidency, and it is clear from the list of the invited countries that the summit will be a domestic political event,\u201d the embassy reportedly said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/biden-democracy-autocracy-summit\/2021\/12\/06\/67558116-56ad-11ec-929e-95502bf8cdd5_story.html\">statement<\/a> to The Washington Post. \u201cTherefore countries that were on friendly terms with the previous administration were not invited.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Notably, while China, Thailand, and Vietnam were not <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/participant-list-the-summit-for-democracy\/\">included<\/a>, Taiwan did receive an invitation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">On Monday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/biden-democracy-autocracy-summit\/2021\/12\/06\/67558116-56ad-11ec-929e-95502bf8cdd5_story.html\">asked<\/a> about the summit, and said, \u201cInclusion or an invitation is not a stamp of approval on their approach to democracy \u2014 nor is exclusion a stamp of the opposite of that, of disapproval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a November <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalinterest.org\/feature\/russian-and-chinese-ambassadors-respecting-people%E2%80%99s-democratic-rights-197165\">op-ed written<\/a> by the Chinese and Russian ambassadors to the U.S., the officials criticized the move of the administration, writing:<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">An evident product of its Cold-War mentality, this will stoke up ideological confrontation and a rift in the world, creating new \u201cdividing lines.\u201d This trend contradicts the development of the modern world. It is impossible to prevent the shaping of a global polycentric architecture but could strain the objective process. China and Russia firmly reject this move.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cDemocracy is not a prerogative of a certain country or a group of countries, but a universal right of all peoples. It can be realized in multiple ways, and no model can fit all countries,\u201d Anatoly Antonov of Russia and Qin Gang of China,&nbsp;added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">They argued that China has \u201can extensive, whole-process socialist democracy. It reflects the people\u2019s will, suits the country\u2019s realities, and enjoys strong support from the people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Regarding Russia, they wrote, \u201cRussia is a democratic federative law-governed state with a republican form of government.
