class=\"subheading\">Dr. Anthony Fauci, President Biden\u2019s chief White House medical adviser, said on Tuesday that the Omicron variant of the Chinese coronavirus, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/06\/report-omicron-spreads-to-17-states-as-joe-biden-fails-to-shut-down-the-virus\/\">been identified<\/a> in several states, \u201cmight even be less severe\u201d than the Delta variant, which is already widespread.<\/p>\n<p>While he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/en\/omicron-variant-almost-certainly-not-more-severe-than-delta-fauci-tells-afp\">said<\/a> the variant is \u201cclearly highly transmissible,\u201d the&nbsp;National Institute of Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) head told AFP that it is \u201calmost certainly is not more severe than Delta.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"D-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B1\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"gmxrevmore\" class=\"H\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThere is some suggestion that it might even be less severe, because when you look at some of the cohorts that are being followed in South Africa, the ratio between the number of infections and the number of hospitalizations seems to be less than with Delta,\u201d Fauci said, although he predicted it would take \u201canother couple of weeks at least in South Africa\u201d to look at the data, as the populations \u201cbeing followed skewed young, and were less likely to become hospitalized,\u201d according to AFP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we get more infections throughout the rest of the world, it might take longer to see what\u2019s the level of severity,\u201d he said, adding that he does not believe the \u201cworst case scenario\u201d is \u201cgoing to come about,\u201d although he added that \u201cyou never know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe worst case scenario is that it is not only highly transmissible, but it also causes severe disease and then you have another wave of infections that are not necessarily blunted by the vaccine or by people\u2019s prior infections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>During last week\u2019s press conference, Fauci admitted that there were many unknowns associated with the Omicron variant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough we haven\u2019t proven it yet, there\u2019s every reason to believe that if you get vaccinated and boosted that you would have at least some degree of cross-protection, very likely against severe disease, even against the Omicron variant,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2021\/12\/03\/fauci-we-havent-proven-if-vaccines-and-boosters-protect-against-omicron-variant\/\">said<\/a> at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the South African doctor who identified the variant said it <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/well-being\/prevention-cures\/583339-doctor-who-discovered-omicron-explains-the\">appeared<\/a> to be \u201cvery mild,\u201d starting in a 33-year-old male patient who experienced fatigue, body aches, a headache, and scratchy throat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we are seeing clinically in South Africa \u2014 and remember I\u2019m at the epicenter of this where I\u2019m practicing \u2014 is extremely mild, for us [these are] mild cases,\u201dAngelique Coetzee, chairwoman of the South African Medical Association, told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t admitted anyone, I\u2019ve spoken to other colleagues of mine and they give the same picture,\u201d she said at the
