Erin Aubry Kaplan, a journalist, said she started an independent version in her Inglewood, California, neighborhood after spotting them in upscale, \u201cwhite\u201d areas. At first, she was pleased to see her neighbors using it. Until, that is, she spotted a white couple taking a book:<\/p>\n<p><em>Then one morning, glancing out my front window, I saw a young white couple stopped at the library. Instantly, I was flooded with emotions \u2014 astonishment, and then resentment, and then astonishment at my resentment. It all converged into a silent scream in my head of,&nbsp;Get off my lawn!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kaplan went on to reveal that she felt hostility toward the pair because of their skin color and their decision to unknowingly make use of a neighborhood amenity she had only intended for minorities. \u201cWhat I resented was not this specific couple,\u201d she said in the opinion published Saturday, \u201cIt was their whiteness, and my feelings of helplessness at not knowing how to maintain the integrity of a Black space that I had created.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At that point, Kaplan referenced incidents related to \u201cwhite flight\u201d in the 1950s and 60s \u2014 when white homeowners moved out of neighborhoods due to black and Hispanic residents moving in:<\/p>\n<p><em>As more Black families moved to the neighborhood, white people moved out in droves\u2026That white flight forged the chiefly Black and brown South Central of popular imagination and created similar demographics in other city neighborhoods across the country \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p>While those are examples of historical prejudice, then Kaplan cited \u201cwhite return\u201d &nbsp;\u2014 white residents moving into minority dominant communities &nbsp;\u2014 as <em>also<\/em> being evidence of present-day racism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut now, as younger generations of white people move back to the neighborhoods their parents shunned, in the phenomenon I call \u2018white return\u2019 \u2026 instead of the blatant racism of what happened at Bruce\u2019s Beach, we now have gentrification,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>She ended her piece seeming to argue for re-segregation of neighborhoods based on race, saying, \u201cIn 2021, it has become increasingly important to maintain and grow Black space, on its own terms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many pundits and politicians immediately slammed the piece as an example of rank bigotry.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Tom Cotton (R-AR) expressed his <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TomCottonAR\/status\/1467664740772196362?s=20\">disappointment<\/a> that NYT would publish \u201cblatant racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Alex Tabarrok, an economics professor at George Mason University, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ATabarrok\/status\/1467916778059677696?s=20\">called<\/a> it \u201can astounding defense of racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And independent journalist Michael Tracey <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mtracey\/status\/1467963552837349380?s=20\">joked<\/a>, \u201cI have one of those Little Free Library things on my street but now I\u2019m going to keep my head down and skulk past it to avoid stoking racial resentment from crazy ladies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>The Daily Wire is one of America\u2019s fastest-growing conservative media companies and counter-cultural outlets for news, opinion, and entertainment.
