Rick Scott sent a letter to NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Tuesday to seek a meeting to discuss the league\u2019s involvement with Communist China.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rickscott.senate.gov\/services\/files\/73DF0CB3-9F88-44CF-9630-F06ECA6B9144\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a> followed a discussion between Scott and Boston Celtics player Enes Kanter Freedom about China\u2019s human rights abuses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery freedom-loving nation must be strong in condemning Communist China\u2019s attacks on freedom &amp; democracy &amp; holding it accountable for its crimes,\u201d Scott said following their virtual meeting last month.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">It was great to speak with @EnesKanter today about our fight against Communist China\u2019s horrific human rights abuses &amp; oppression. Every freedom-loving nation must be strong in condemning Communist China\u2019s attacks on freedom &amp; democracy &amp; holding it accountable for its crimes. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5VXqTC26V7\">pic.twitter.com\/5VXqTC26V7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Rick Scott (@SenRickScott) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SenRickScott\/status\/1461373677484888069?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 18, 2021<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Scott\u2019s letter furthered efforts to hold the NBA accountable with respect to China and its government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NBA has done nothing to stand up to Communist China, and in some ways has taken actions that seem to have no purpose other than to please General Secretary Xi\u2019s murderous and tyrannical Communist Chinese government,\u201d Scott boldly stated in the letter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I find most unsettling about the NBA\u2019s inaction and silence on issues involving Communist China is that the league has a history of strong support for activism when it comes to social challenges. Both now and in the past, the NBA has stood by and unquestionably supported players who advocate for equality and justice, yet you have utterly failed to carry this practice forward when it comes to the gross injustice we are seeing in Communist China,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Scott also called out the commissioner regarding the league\u2019s support of equality only when it is \u201cpolitically convenient.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow can the NBA, in good conscience, claim to support equality and justice when you\u2019re picking and choosing to do so based on political convenience?\u201d the senator added.<\/p>\n<p>Scott concluded his letter with a call for a meeting to further discuss the controversy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe NBA can be an immensely powerful force for good, both in the United States and across the world, and I hope to discuss these important matters with you. Thank you for your attention, and I look forward to scheduling a time for us to meet,\u201d the senator wrote.<\/p>\n<p>The Daily Wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/kanter-blasts-nba-claims-he-was-asked-to-remove-free-tibet-sneakers-for-fear-of-being-banned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> in November that Kanter Freedom ripped the NBA during an interview with journalist Christiane Amanpour.<\/p>\n<p>Amanpour asked Kanter if the NBA was concerned about his outspokenness regarding Communist China \u2014 citing the kerfuffle with Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey and Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p>Kanter replied that he stands \u201cfor justice and freedom\u201d no \u201cmatter who it\u2019s for or against,\u201d then offered a comparison between how he was treated for speaking out against Turkey versus how he is allegedly being treated when it comes to China.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">.@EnesKanter says that he doesn\u2019t care about the cost that he may face from criticizing China.
