(Photo by Fox Photos\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hanson went on to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prageru.com\/video\/pearl-harbor-a-day-that-lives-in-infamy\">explain<\/a> that while \u201cthe attack was&nbsp;brilliant,\u201d it \u201cdid not achieve its goal,\u201d because, \u201cby a twist of fate,&nbsp;the three American aircraft carriers based at Pearl, the ships the Japanese most wanted to destroy \u2014 Enterprise, Lexington, and Saratoga \u2014 were all out to sea on the 7th, and safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, \u201cthe Japanese didn\u2019t finish the job,\u201d Hanson continued, explaining that the Japanese needed \u201cthree attack waves,\u201d rather than just two, in order to destroy \u201ca full six months worth of stored naval and aviation fuel, dockyards, and maintenance shops, and truly set the Americans reeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Watch Below:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B2\" class=\"a8d\"><\/figure>\n<p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Pearl Harbor: A Day That Lives in Infamy | 5 Minute Video\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FIH5WjT3b2U?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Hanson said that Japan attacked Pearl Harbor because it believed \u201cit had to&nbsp;neutralize America\u201d in order \u201cto dominate and control all of Asia, its people, and its resources.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the hindsight of history, this appears suicidal, but at the time, it almost made sense,\u201d he said, adding that \u201cin 1940, the United States was, militarily speaking, in a sorry state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe ships in its pacific fleet were few, and many were outdated,\u201d Hanson explained. \u201cThe Japanese fleet, in contrast, was newer, bigger, and stronger. (Photo by Keystone\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cLike the rest of the world, the Japanese had watched most of Europe fall to the Nazis while America did little to stop it,\u201d he added. \u201cIf the U.S. wasn\u2019t going to fight in Europe, where it had many alliances, why would it fight in Asia where it had few?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"M-ROS-B3\" class=\"a8d adSo\"><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe Japanese reasoned America would sue for peace,\u201d Hanson said of Japan\u2019s thought process when it attacked Pearl Harbor.<\/p>\n<p>But \u201cjust as Hitler underestimated Soviet strength and overestimated their own, the Japanese underestimated American strength and overestimated their own. Instead of cowing America, the Pearl Harbor attack enraged it,\u201d Hanson said.<\/p>\n<p>Hanson explained what then followed the Pearl Harbor attack:<\/p>\n<blockquote readability=\"23\">\n<p>Within six months, General Jimmy Doolittle led a surprise bombing raid on Tokyo, an astounding feat no one at the time, including the Japanese, considered possible.<\/p>\n<p>By August 1942, a mere nine months after Pearl Harbor, American forces shifted to offense, landing marines on the island of Guadalcanal. Meanwhile, at home, the nation was gearing up for the greatest industrial renaissance in the history of civilization.<\/p>\n<p>In a little more than three years, the United States would build more war ships and support vessels than all the navies in the world combined.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u201cIn the hindsight of history, it seems like the allied victory was inevitable,\u201d Hanson said. \u201cBut victory came at a terrible price.
